Explanation

The first half of the couplet names a good quality, "being loving out of grace". The second half points to its opposite: "those who, desiring another's wealth, watch for his negligence". Valluvar says that in such persons there is no grace and no love.

Pochchappu means forgetfulness or inattention. The picture is of a mind crouching in wait for the moment when another is careless in guarding his own things. He waits as a hunter waits for the bird to move. The very waiting shows how low that mind has fallen.

Arul is the compassion that feels another's suffering; anbu is the working form of that compassion. A person without these does not care about another's loss. We too may ask whether the thought arises in us to profit from other people's trust. It is the way of grace to help those who rely on us, not to exploit their lapses. So the verse also reminds us of our duty to guard the trust placed in us.

Desiring wealth is not in itself the fault; seeking wealth is needed for life. The fault lies in waiting for another's forgetfulness. A person who earns honestly and takes his own share cheats no one. But one who looks for the moment others are not watching kills compassion in his own mind. The word il, "does not exist", declares firmly that grace has no place there, and where grace is absent a cruelty grows that no law can stop. That is the quiet warning of the verse.

A story

Jayadratha Seizes His Chance

The Vana Parva of the Mahabharata tells an incident from the Pandavas' forest years. Jayadratha, king of Sindhu, was the husband of Duryodhana's sister Duhshala. One day, passing through the Kamyaka forest, he saw Draupadi alone at the hermitage and was captivated by her beauty.

The Pandavas had gone hunting, and only the priest Dhaumya remained nearby. Jayadratha watched for this chance. He first came with seeming friendliness and accepted the hospitality Draupadi offered. Then, when she refused his advances, he forced her into his chariot and drove off. Dhaumya tried to stop him, but he would not listen.

The Pandavas returned and learned what had happened. They pursued him swiftly. Bhima and Arjuna broke his army, and Bhima seized Jayadratha. Yudhishthira asked that he be left alive for his sister Duhshala's sake. The Mahabharata says he was humiliated, his head shaved, and sent away. Later, in the Kurukshetra war, he was slain by Arjuna.

The couplet comes alive here: "Those who desire another's wealth and watch for his lapse have no grace or love." Jayadratha forgot his kinship and the duty owed to a host, and looked for the hour when the husbands were away. Had grace and love been in him, he would have shunned that opportunity. The story shows that one who profits from another's inattention ends in shame and ruin.
