Explanation

A king's subjects look for two simple qualities in him. The first is being easy to see: a man with a grievance should be able to get past guards and officers and meet the king and speak. The second is the absence of harsh words: even if the petitioner speaks wrongly, from ignorance or anxiety, the king does not answer with anger or rebuke. Valluvar says the land of a king with both qualities will be praised and held high by the world.

'Meekkoorum' means to speak of as high, to praise. Some commentators take 'nilam' as the king's country and others as the world he rules. The word 'allanel' joins the two conditions together. If a king is easy to see but speaks harshly, people will fear him and keep away. If his words are sweet but he cannot be seen, the sweetness serves no one.

In life today this applies to everyone in a position of leadership. Whether a manager in an office, a headmaster in a school or the eldest in a home, a person who makes it safe for others to speak will find that the truth reaches him easily. People who fear a harsh word hide the facts, and the leader is left standing in the dark.

A story

Rama and Guha

At the start of Valmiki's Ramayana, the sage Narada describes Rama's qualities to Valmiki. Rama is praised there as one who speaks first to those who come to him, with a smile, and who never uses a harsh word. That nature shows clearly in the Ayodhya Kanda.

To keep his father's word, Rama set out for the forest with Sita and Lakshmana. On the bank of the Ganga at Shringaverapura, Guha, the chief of the Nishadas, heard of his coming and ran to meet him. Guha led the boatmen, and he was a man who might well have feared to approach a royal family. But when Rama saw him he rose, went forward and embraced him closely. 'Guha, you are dear to me as my own life, and I am glad to see you,' he said, in kind words.

Guha brought food and fruit. Rama was under the vows of an ascetic and could not accept them. Yet he explained this in so loving a way that Guha's heart was not hurt. Tradition says he spoke as if he had received Guha's love itself as the offering. Guha then arranged boats and ferried them across the Ganga.

Though he was a prince, Rama was so approachable that a tribal chief felt no hesitation in coming near him. There was no harsh word in him. That is why his rule is still praised and held high as Ramarajya. The two qualities of the verse are found together here.
