Explanation

There are many things in the world that are hard to obtain. Wealth, fame and power are not easy to gain. But rarer than all of these, says Valluvar, is to cherish the great and make them one's own. For the friendship of great men cannot be bought with money.

The word 'thamaraa' means as one's own, as a kinsman. It is not an easy matter for a great man to accept us lovingly as his own. Before accepting a person they examine his character and intention. So to win their trust is very hard.

There is a subtlety in the word 'peni'. To make a great man one's own, one must honour him, behave with humility and listen to his word. Such humility is what wins their love. So it is said to be hard to obtain.

Some commentators take it to mean that such a support is hard to find; others take it to mean that it is hard to grow oneself into a person worthy of the great man's love. There is truth in both.

Today too, for a good teacher or guide to accept us as a student is a great fortune. We must grow the fitness for it through humility and effort.

A story

Rama and Vishvamitra

This incident is told in the Bala Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. While Dasharatha, king of Ayodhya, sat in his court, the great sage Vishvamitra arrived. Dasharatha welcomed him and said, 'What do you wish? I will do what I can.'

Vishvamitra asked that Rama be sent to protect his sacrifice from the demons who obstructed it. Dasharatha hesitated to send his young son. Then Vasishtha explained to Dasharatha: 'Vishvamitra has rare powers. To send Rama to him is for Rama's own good.' Dasharatha agreed.

Rama and Lakshmana followed Vishvamitra. On the way, tradition says, he taught the two many rare mantras and divine arrows. He told Rama to slay the demoness Tataka. Until the sacrifice was completed, the two stood guard.

Then Vishvamitra took Rama to Mithila. There, at Sita's svayamvara, Rama broke the bow of Shiva. The start of that journey too came through the sage's affection.

As the verse says, to approach the great and become dear to them is a rare gain. Rama behaved humbly toward the sage. He accepted what he said without opposing it. So the sage took Rama as his own and gave him his rare learning.

That is the meaning of a rare gain: the power that wealth cannot buy came by humility. He did not complain even when he was tired from the long walk, and what the sage gave he accepted with a whole heart.
