Explanation

This verse explains the need for support by two comparisons. One is trade: one without capital cannot gain a profit. The other is a building: a roof without a supporting pole will not stand. In the same way a king who has not gained good support will not succeed and will not stand.

'Mudhal' is capital in trade. Without even a small capital no profit comes. In rule, such capital is good support, knowledge and the people's backing. Though commentators name these in different ways, they agree on the idea of support.

'Madhalai' is the pole or pillar that bears the roof. However beautiful the royal palace, without a pillar it will lean in a single wind. Valluvar indicates that helpers are like pillars to a king.

Parimelazhagar explains 'saarpu' in this verse as the support of the great. As a continuation of the earlier verses, he warns by these two comparisons those who lack the aid of great men. Some take it as a general idea about starting an undertaking without capital.

In life today too, however much ability one has, it is hard to last long without guides and supporters. The power to stand alone is useful only at times.

So seeking and gathering good supporters is a leader's first investment. That is its meaning.

A story

Indra Who Lost Brihaspati

This incident is told in the sixth Skandha of the Bhagavata Purana. Once Indra sat on his throne in the assembly of the gods. Wealth, power and fame were all full in him. Praised by the gods, he had great pride in himself.

Then Brihaspati, the preceptor of the gods, came to that assembly. It was proper to rise and welcome him with respect. But in his pride Indra did not rise from the throne, and gave him no fitting honour. Brihaspati said nothing and quietly left the assembly.

After a while Indra realised his fault. 'I have insulted my preceptor,' he grieved. He went in search of the teacher. But Brihaspati had vanished; he could not be found.

The asuras came to know this. They thought the gods without the support of their preceptor were weak. The asuras attacked the world of the gods. Without the counsel and protection of the preceptor, the gods were defeated. Indra lost his throne.

The gods went to Brahma and pleaded. Brahma told them to take Vishvarupa, the son of Tvashtri, as their priest. The story goes on that only after obtaining a new guide in this way did the gods regain their strength.

As the verse says, one without support has no standing. Indra had wealth and an army, but once he lost his preceptor his position tilted, like a roof from which the pillar is removed.

It also shows that pride can break a man's very support.

To reflect on

Who are the pillars holding up your work or family, and have you thanked them lately?
