Explanation

This verse speaks of two tasks of the great. One is to remove the trouble that has come. The other is to guard in advance so that it does not come again. Valluvar says that those whose nature is to do both are the support worth cherishing.

'Utra noi' means not only disease but every kind of trouble that has befallen one in life. Parimelazhagar explains it as the trouble that came to the king. But bodily illness, mental illness and danger to the country are all included. The knowledge to cure them lies with the great.

The depth of this verse is in 'uraaamai murkaakkum'. To prevent trouble before it comes is a greater skill than to cure it. The experienced foresee coming danger. That foresight is what the young do not have, and for that very reason the support of the great is needed.

The word 'penik kolal' shows that such a support should be cherished and preserved. It is not enough to approach them once; they must be treated with continued respect.

Today too, a doctor, a teacher and an older friend not only cure a trouble but show the way to keep it from coming. To honour them is for our own good.

A story

Vidura and the House of Lac

The incident of the house of lac is told in the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata. While the Pandavas were growing up in Hastinapura, Duryodhana made a treacherous plan to destroy them. Saying that a festival was being held in a city called Varanavata, he sent them there. A new palace was built there for them to stay in. It was made of lac, ghee and other things that catch fire easily.

As they set out, their uncle Vidura gave Yudhishthira a message in a riddle form, in a language only the two of them would understand. He said words meaning: 'A fire that enters the forest does not remove the cold, yet fire burns everything. There is a weapon that cuts through a net. The wise man escapes the fire.' Yudhishthira understood its hidden meaning.

After learning the truth about the house of lac at Varanavata, the Pandavas lived there on guard. A miner sent by Vidura dug a secret tunnel through which they could escape the house. One night they themselves set fire to the house; tradition says that in that fire there was another woman with her five sons. The Pandavas left through the tunnel, went a long way into the forest and saved their lives.

What Vidura did here is just what the verse says: guarding before it comes. He perceived Duryodhana's harm before it was done. He made the Pandavas perceive it. And he arranged beforehand a way to escape the trouble that would come.

The Pandavas survived because they had cherished Vidura as their support. Had they ignored his word, they might have perished there.
