Explanation

The poet pictures the world as mud: the more you struggle, the deeper you sink. Murugan opened a way out for one who had no merit to earn it. The second half paints Shiva's matted hair, which holds the Ganga, a serpent, flowers and the crescent moon side by side. Hair that can bear all these together bears every kind of creature; the son of that Lord bore the poet too.

Shiva Purana

Why Shiva Wears the Crescent Moon

From the Shiva Purana. The moon married the twenty-seven daughters of Daksha but loved only Rohini. For the sake of his grieving daughters, Daksha cursed the moon to waste away. Shrinking night by night, the moon took refuge in Shiva. Shiva placed the last thin sliver of him on his matted hair and protected him, and from then on the moon wanes and grows full again. The Lord who saved a fading moon is the father of the Lord who lifted the poet out of the mire.
