Explanation

This verse tells the peak glory of not asking. Even in poverty, with no place and no means, the nobility, 'saalbu', of one who does not agree to beg is so great that the whole world cannot contain it, says Valluvar. Here 'idam' can mean a place to stay, a shelter, wealth, all of these. The wonder of the verse is its irony. For one without place, the whole world is too small for his greatness! In outward look he is at the lowest; in heart he is world-high. This contrast stresses his nobility. The world's scale of measure differs from Valluvar's.

The word 'saalbu' is lofty in Valluvar's estimation; there is a separate chapter on nobility, Saanraanmai. Here not asking is shown as the mark of nobility. That is, a mind that does not become a burden on others and guards its self-respect is the highest culture. The lesson for us is that our worth lies not in our wealth but in our stand. The world should bow its head to one who stands erect even in poverty. The way to honour such people is to help them in ways that guard their self-respect.

Through this verse Valluvar turns society's values upside down. To a world that measures people by wealth, rank and land, he says the quality of not begging is the true measure. A man's height lies not in the places he attains but in how he stands wherever he is. The greatness that fills the whole world points to just this.

A story

Kamalam the Weaver's Resolve

In Kanchipuram a weaver, Kamalammal, lived as a widow. After her husband's death the loom and the house were lost to debt. She moved to a small tin shed at the roadside. Finding food for four children was a great challenge.

Some good folk of the town came forward to help. 'Amma, we shall give you a place in the temple annadhanam, and rice and money too,' they said. Kamalammal humbly declined. 'Thank you, sirs. My hand can spin thread. Just give me yarn to spin and I will do it. Pay me only the wage for it,' she said.

She spun night and day. Since she could not afford a loom, she prepared thread for other people's looms. There were nights she slept hungry, but not one day when she ate by begging. Her honesty and fine work were talked about among the silk-weaving firms.

In five years she reached the point of buying a loom. In ten years she had risen enough to employ four women under her. 'Had I begged, my children too would have taken begging as their way,' she would say.

Her children studied and rose. Her eldest daughter became a teacher. Kamalammal's story is spoken of for generations in the weavers' streets of Kanchipuram. In her house every guest had food; she never said no.

This event is proof of 'the nobility that will not beg even when without place'. She who kept nobility in a state of placelessness filled all places with her greatness.
