Explanation

In this verse the heroine's voice mixes pain and boldness. The hero, who had assured her "Fear not, I shall protect you," seems to have left her now. By his leaving she stands exposed to shame before many. Being so, she asks whether there is any sense now in being ashamed of the rumour. After experiencing a very great humiliation, there is no use in worrying about a small slander. It is a firm state of mind born of an excess of pain.

Anjal ombu is a promise that guards fear: "Do not fear; I will protect," the hero had said earlier. When he does not fulfil that word, the heroine's position is most cruel. When one who gave firm assurance later withdraws, she becomes easy prey to blame before society. The hint is that the blame should fall not on her but on him who did not keep his word.

The verse makes us think in two ways. One, we should realise that promises we give depend on someone's honour and trust, and keep them. The other, we should understand that people in severe distress do not fear small slanders, and treat them with kindness. Valluvar shows through the heroine that breaking a word is no small fault.

A story

Shakuntala in the Royal Court

A sorrowful part of the story of Shakuntala and Dushyanta comes in the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata. Dushyanta met Shakuntala in the hermitage of the sage Kanva and married her by the Gandharva rite. Returning later to his own kingdom, he said, "I shall send messengers to fetch you; do not fear." But days passed and no word came from him.

Shakuntala conceived and bore a son. He was named Bharata. The boy grew strong enough to play with lion cubs in the forest. The sage Kanva sent Shakuntala and her son to Dushyanta. They reached the royal court. There, the Mahabharata says, in the full assembly Dushyanta behaved as if he did not know her.

Hearing these words in front of the assembly, Shakuntala was shaken. Yet she did not weep; she spoke with composure and a firm heart. She told the truth. The words she spoke about dharma, truth and trust silenced the court. The epic shows her speaking sternly in the sense that to pretend not to know her when he knew was a disgrace to himself.

When she had finished, a voice from the sky said that Shakuntala spoke the truth and that Bharata was indeed Dushyanta's son. Then Dushyanta accepted her and the boy. The epic says he declared that he had acted so in order to confirm the truth before the people, though he had known it already.

The heroine of the verse says, "He who said 'Fear not' has left me to shame before many; there is no point now in being ashamed of the rumour." Shakuntala too stands bold in the great assembly. She shows firmly that the blame should fall not on her but on the one who did not keep his word.

To reflect on

Is there a promise you made that someone is still relying on, and what would it take to honour it fully?
