The Announcement of the Rumour

This chapter speaks of the village gossip about the lovers, the pain it brings and also a strange sweetness. To the hero it seems to make love sweeter, to the heroine it is ghee poured on fire, and Valluvar shows both views.

Introduction

This is the seventh chapter of the book of love, within the Kalaviyal. Alar means the village's slander, a spreading rumour; Tamil also calls it kavvai. Even when the lovers meet in secret, the news slowly spreads through the village and becomes everyone's topic. It is a natural stage of the secret love. In the Sangam akam poems the spreading of alar is a much discussed subject; it distresses the lovers and also acts as a social pressure that pushes towards marriage.

The charm of this chapter lies in the hero and heroine speaking of one thing in opposite ways. In the first five verses the hero welcomes the gossip. He rejoices that it is only when the village talks that his life holds, and that the talk makes the love sweeter. To him the talk seems a sign that the world acknowledges her as his own. In the next five verses the heroine grieves over the same gossip. She laments how big a tale the village spins over a single meeting, and how her mother's words turn into water that nourishes her pain. There is a subtlety too in that she carries this blame alone, without him.

To understand the hero's joy we must remember that he is not glad that the village slanders; he is glad that it shows his love to be real enough for others to notice. Only one who understands the heroine's grief can fully understand the hero's joy. Together the two views reveal the whole shape of alar. That Valluvar gives place to both feelings is a mark of his even-handed poetry.

In our own life rumour spreads easily on the internet, in offices and on streets. This chapter teaches us to speak less about the relationships of others, knowing how much pain such talk can cause. At the same time, it shows a subtle way: not to be shaken too much by what is said of us, but to keep peace in knowing our own truth. The word alar comes from the root alarthal, to blossom, to spread. It gracefully suggests news that was a bud opening and spreading its fragrance through the village. Because the same word here also means slander, it hints that, like a flower's scent, both good and bad spread.

Chapter story

Valli's Tale Through the Village

This episode comes in the story of Murugan and Valli as told in the Skanda Purana and Tamil tradition. Valli, daughter of the hunter chief Nambirajan, was watching the millet field near the hill. Lord Murugan came seeking her and spoke to her in various forms. Valli gradually came to love him. But the meetings of the two could not remain unseen by the villagers.

The women working in the millet field noticed the change in Valli's behaviour. While keeping watch she looked often towards the hill, sang to herself and paid less attention to food. Her friends saw this and said among themselves, "Some hunter seems to be coming here." The talk passed from them to the huts and then through the whole village. Many reports flew, that some old man was seen near the millet field, and that a hunter was talking with Valli.

When the news reached Nambirajan and his people, they were angry. Out of concern for Valli's safety they increased the guard in the millet field. Valli grieved at this. She realised that talk about her was a blemish on her father's name and clan. Yet she did not deny her love.

In the end of this story, which tradition tells in various ways, Valli's kinsfolk came to know the divinity of Murugan, and then the two were married. It is worth noting that the very talk of the villagers eventually led to the public acceptance of the marriage. Only after the hidden love came into the open did the clan accept it.

In the verses, the hero sees the village talk as a strange pleasure; the heroine sees it as unbearable pain. In Valli's story the two join: for Murugan it was an expected result, for Valli an experience of fear. In the end both move towards an auspicious conclusion.

There was a subtle truth in that talk. Even if the villagers misread Valli's change, they were right in sensing that her heart had settled on someone. Though the form of the talk was gossip, beneath it lay the truth of love. That is why the hero does not wholly hate alar.

Folk songs say that Murugan, learning of Valli's distress, consoled her: "Though the village talks, I know your heart, and time will change the hearts of your kin too." Valli was comforted. Her fear lessened and her patience grew. People living at places like Thiruttani and Vallimalai sing this tale in songs even today, and devotees there call Valli "the girl of our own house" with familiarity.

What the tale tells us is that even when others' talk frightens us, true love quietly stands beyond it. When time ripens, the light of truth makes the whole village accept.

Key lessons

  • Village talk may bring the lovers' bond out of hiding and lead to social acceptance.
  • It is natural for one person to feel the same talk as joy and another as pain.
  • When speaking of others' relationships we should think of the pain it may cause.
  • To stop slander by slander is like pouring ghee on fire.
  • True love stands quietly, not swayed much by what others say.
