Separation unendurable

This chapter speaks of the heroine's fear and her inability to bear parting when her husband is about to set out on a journey. In ten verses Valluvar shows gently that even the news of parting can hurt more than the parting itself.

Introduction

After seeing love's meeting, joy and slander in the book of love, this chapter for the first time faces separation. Many chapters that follow will show different stages of parting. This one is about the time before the separation actually happens. The news comes that the hero is setting out, to earn wealth, to study or to do his duty, and the heroine's heart trembles. He is still near, but her mind has already begun to live the days without him. Aatraamai means inability to bear.

In this chapter the speaker is the heroine, and her voice sounds through all ten verses. Her first word is "if there is any way for you not to go, tell me." Then her fear gradually widens. His glance once gave joy; now even his embrace gives pain from fear of parting. If the very one who comforted her is leaving, whom is she to trust? She asks her friend to stop the hero from going. She fears that the bangles slipping from her wrists will announce his parting to the village.

In these verses Valluvar shows parting as an event felt differently by man and woman. For him it is a call of duty; for her it is the sorrow of having half her life taken away. The difference is a result of the ancient way of life. But even today, though the forms of parting change, with a family member going abroad for work or a child going to a hostel for study, the state of mind remains the same.

At the chapter's end the heroine's self-consoling voice is also heard: the line that many live through parting and wait alive. Here Valluvar's humanity shows. Without exaggerating sorrow, he also shows its limit. When we face the parting of our own loved ones, this chapter can console: we are not alone; human beings have borne this same sorrow generation after generation. In the Tamil akam tradition separation is described in five kinds: parting to study, to earn wealth, to fight enemies, to go as an envoy, and parting for other reasons. Of these the parting for wealth appears in most poems. In this chapter Valluvar does not name the reason for the parting; he centres only on the sorrow of the event itself, so these verses fit a parting of any age and any cause. Notice also that the heroine does not command "do not go"; she asks, "tell me if there is a way of not going." That gentleness is the dignity of the Tamil woman.

Chapter story

The Chariot That Left for Mathura

This scene comes from the tenth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana. Kamsa sent Akrura to bring Krishna and Balarama to Mathura. Akrura was in truth a devotee of Krishna. All along the way he travelled in the joy of soon seeing his feet. Reaching Vrindavan, he saw Krishna and Balarama and invited them to come to Mathura. The news that Krishna had agreed spread through the cowherd village.

The state of the gopis cannot be told. They stayed awake all night. The Bhagavata describes many of them lamenting that Akrura was merciless, one who had come to snatch their eyes from them. Some blocked the road to stop the chariot from leaving, others wept and wailed. Their bangles slipped from their hands; the kohl in their eyes dissolved in tears. They could not believe Krishna would leave them.

Yashoda and Nanda wilted at the thought of parting from their son. Nanda made ready to go to Mathura with gifts. As Krishna climbed into the chariot, the gopis stood around it. He consoled them. Songs say he told them, "I shall return soon." Poets sing that on that word alone they kept their lives.

When the chariot set out, dust rose. The gopis kept watching that dust for a long time. Even after the sound of the wheels faded, their eyes did not leave that direction. At that spot their hearts stood half gone.

This scene makes clear the feeling in the heroine's line "If there is any not-going, tell me; tell your quick return to those who will live till then." What they asked was whether there was a way for him not to go. The words "I shall return soon" were no comfort; what they wanted was "I shall stay."

The trees and cattle of Vrindavan too stood silent that day, poets sing. The Yamuna flowed quietly. Cuckoos did not sing. The thought that Krishna's flute would no longer be heard spread over everything. The tradition of imagining nature itself sharing in parting is found in Tamil akam poems as well. When Uddhava later came and consoled them, the Bhagavata says, the gopis described their grief in tears. Parting had not lessened their love; it had deepened it.

Akrura's coming gave the gopis sorrow, yet his own devotion to Krishna was pure. The tale also shows that in the Lord's play what gives joy to one may be sorrow to another, and that to see one event as duty and another as loss is the nature of life.

In this story the parting comes from unavoidable duty. Krishna went for his divine task. But love cannot at once accept that reason. The truth of unbearable parting is that people suffer where duty and love collide.

Key lessons

  • The news of parting is sometimes more painful than parting itself.
  • Where duty and love collide the heart wanders, and this should be respected.
  • The comfort 'Do not worry, I am with you' helps more than 'I shall return soon.'
  • Remembering that many have borne parting and waited gives comfort in sorrow.
  • Those who gave a promise bear the responsibility of keeping it.
