Explanation

In this verse the heroine weighs her husband's heart. In her mind, one who hesitates even to speak of parting is loving; one who says it straight to her face is hard-hearted. If he has firmly declared, "I am leaving," she asks how the hope she has held until now, that he will show her grace, can last.

Nasai means desire, expectation. The word aridu, "hard", does not say that the hope has been utterly destroyed; it says it is difficult to hold. So a faint hope still lives within her, though it trembles. It is a delicate picture of the moment when a woman's trust in her husband begins to crack.

Hardness of heart is not evil everywhere. A man who parts for duty may speak with firmness. But Valluvar's unspoken view is that such firmness must be mixed with the gentleness of love. Even in our time, the manner of delivering an important message is remembered longer than the message itself. Even a difficult decision, if told in kind words, can be borne by a relationship. As we hear this tale we too feel Harishchandra's sorrow. Where truth, duty and love collide, the decision a man takes may look hard from outside while within it is soaked in tears. The heroine of the verse carries her doubt until she can come to understand this.

A story

Harishchandra and Chandramati

The Markandeya Purana tells the story of King Harishchandra. For the sake of truth he gave his kingdom and wealth as a gift to the sage Vishvamitra, and with his wife Chandramati and son Rohitashva he reached the city of Kashi. He had nothing left to pay the fee the sage demanded. With no other way, he was forced to sell his wife and son into service in a brahmin's house.

On the day of the sale he hesitated over how to tell his wife the truth. The Purana sings this moment in tears. The tale says that Chandramati, seeing the sorrow on his face, herself understood what he could not say. She knew her husband's truthfulness, and she realised that he did this not from a hard heart but from a hard duty.

Here the heroine's fear of the verse is one side; Chandramati's understanding is the other. In the verse the heroine grieves that "one who says parting to the face is hard-hearted." But Harishchandra could not hide his tears. He was not hard-hearted; he carried the hardness of duty. The same parting can be understood in two ways.

The Purana does not hide how heavy the decision was for him. A hard act done under the weight of duty is not the same as a hard heart, and love learns to tell the two apart only with time and trust.

In the end, the Purana says, through the victory of truth the two were reunited. During that parting it was the trust each held in the other that sustained them. The story shows that the manner of announcing a parting, and the manner of hearing it, decide the depth of a relationship.
