Explanation

A subtle psychological truth is told in this verse. His glance once gave joy; now even his embrace gives pain. The reason is the fear that as the embrace happens, the parting is about to happen. Even while enjoying pleasure, the thought that it is about to end spoils its sweetness. By the words pirivu anjum we see that the heroine already experiences the pain of parting beforehand.

Punkan means a sorrowful aspect, a grief of mind. That the embrace that gave joy has become an embrace that gives sorrow is the paradox here. It shows a great truth: the shadow of sorrow falls on joy even before sorrow comes. Fear of the future spoils the happiness of the present. It is a particular trait of the human mind.

Many people feel the same today. When a family gathers on holiday, the thought that tomorrow everyone must go back lessens the day's joy. Valluvar's remedy is not stated, but if we understand the feeling we can handle it. It helps to enjoy the fullness of the time that is there and to accept the fear of parting, seeing it too as a part of love. Fear of parting at the very moment of union is, in a way, the measure of love itself.

A story

The Night Before the Pilgrimage

It was the night before the day Subramanian was to leave on a pilgrimage to Kashi. In a village near Karaikudi he sat talking with his wife Meenakshi. It was his mother's long-held wish to go on a pilgrimage, and it was his duty to take her. He had reckoned it would take three months.

That night there was a full moon. The two sat on the porch. Normally this was a very sweet time for them. Subramanian put his hand on his wife's shoulder. Meenakshi leaned into his embrace. But she could not feel the joy fully. The thought "Tomorrow at this time you will not be here" pressed on her heart.

Her eyes grew moist. Subramanian noticed. "Why are you weeping? It's only three months," he said. Meenakshi softly said, "Even now when you are near, what I feel is the pain of parting. Your shoulder is no comfort to me tonight; it reminds me of tomorrow's absence." He realised the depth of her words.

For a long time they were silent. Then he said, "Let us not spend tonight in fear of parting. Let us remember the sweet days we have spent together." They recalled one by one their wedding day, their first Pongal and the day the child was born. The night passed gently and sweetly.

When he set out at dawn, Meenakshi bade him goodbye with tears yet with a smile. The conversation of that night helped her bear the three months.
