The Abandonment of Reserve

This chapter shows a lover so overcome by love that he lets go of his reserve and manly pride and resolves to ride the palmyra stalk in public. Modesty is a virtue, Valluvar says, but deep love can rise above it.

Introduction

This is the third chapter of the Kalaviyal in the book of love. In the first two chapters the hero and heroine marvelled at each other and sensed the excellence of their love. Now that love has grown beyond restraint. By tradition, love in the secret stage must stay hidden; this chapter asks what the hero does when it can no longer be hidden. The title, naanuth thuravuraiththal, means declaring the abandonment of modesty.

The central word is madal, the stalk of the palmyra. In ancient Tamil custom a youth made a horse-like figure from the palmyra frond and rode it in procession through the streets, which was called madalurthal. A lover whose love was not fulfilled would carry a picture of the girl he loved, smear ash on his body, and parade on the palm-stalk horse. The purpose was to proclaim his love before the village, soften the hearts of elders and win their acceptance. It was a custom for men only, and this chapter itself says that women do not ride the madal. In the Sangam poems it is a drastic resort, for the rider stakes his own honour.

Of the ten verses the first seven are in the hero's voice and the last three in the heroine's. The hero first states the need to ride the stalk, then laments how his modesty and manliness have been swept away by the flood of desire. He says that the pain the heroine gave him returns by turns as evening and as the palm-stalk, and he remarks that it is the glory of women not to ride it. The heroine's voice tells sadly how her love breaks out of concealment and how the village laughs at it.

How does this apply today? Modesty is a good quality, but in some situations it prevents us from expressing honest feelings. Where real affection ought to speak, silence may lose a relationship. At the same time, Valluvar does not praise the hero's daring or encourage the ride; he shows the depth of the man's suffering. The loss of modesty is a sign of a condition, not an ideal. The subtle lesson is to recognise when love is disturbing our peace and honour, and to handle it with composure.

Chapter story

Rukmini's Letter

This is the story of Rukmini from the tenth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana. Rukmini, daughter of King Bhishmaka of Vidarbha, was unmatched in beauty and wisdom. Hearing visitors speak of the glories of Krishna of Dvaraka, she accepted him in her heart as her husband. But her brother Rukmi decided to give her in marriage to his friend Shishupala, king of Chedi. Bhishmaka consented to his son's wish.

Rukmini was distraught. In those days it was considered immodest for a maiden to declare her wish openly. Yet her heart sought Krishna alone. She called a trusted Brahmin and sent him to Dvaraka with a letter. In that letter, the Purana says, she wrote without hiding her heart: that hearing his fame her mind had been drawn to him, that she had chosen him as her lord, and she begged him to come and rescue her. Following the custom of visiting the temple of the Goddess on the day before the wedding, she asked him to come there and take her away.

The Brahmin reached Dvaraka and handed the letter to Krishna. Krishna read it and was glad. "She fills my heart as well; I accept her call," he said, mounted his chariot and set out for Vidarbha. When Rukmini visited the temple of Ambika, worshipped and was returning, Krishna lifted her into his chariot and went to Dvaraka.

Some may think that what Rukmini did was against feminine modesty. But what she did was dignified. She did not run away secretly; she called the one she loved directly. She showed the courage to decide the course of her own life. To give up reserve is not always a disgrace; sometimes it is the expression of truth.

The poets sing that in each word of Rukmini's letter there were trust and humility. She laid her heart before him and left the decision to him; that generosity shows through. She did not command, she petitioned. It shows the beauty of courage and humility standing together in love. Even after the elopement, tradition remembers her not as a runaway but as the queen whose faith matched her courage, honoured in the Bhagavata as the consort of Krishna.

As the lover in the verse dared to ride the palm-stalk, Rukmini dared to write her letter. Both crossed an inner barrier for the truth of their love, and the firmness and purity with which they did so show the worth of that love.
