Explanation

When floods come, a man seizes a raft and tries to reach the shore. The hero had two things in his life as a raft: modesty and fine manliness. But he laments that the flood of desire is strong enough to carry away even that raft. Kadumpunal is a fast, fierce flood. A raft cannot stand against it, and the man clinging to it is swept along. To picture modesty and manliness as a raft is apt, for these are the supports that keep a man from drowning in the flood of feeling.

The image also tells a harsh truth. We trust our good qualities and think they will always protect us. But when the force of emotion grows, even they may fail. So the verse urges us to caution beforehand. If we stand on the bank before the flood comes we may escape; once we have entered the flood, even the raft does not help. Wisdom lies in respecting the power of our feelings beforehand and avoiding situations in which they pass the limit.

Some commentators also see here Valluvar's warning about desire. But it is no suppression; it is a keen look that asks us to respect emotion. Today we get caught in similar floods of social media, debt and so on. It is good to practise asking whether our rafts of modesty and self-control would hold in them.

A story

Menaka and the Sage's Penance

The Bala Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana tells the story of Vishwamitra. After being defeated by Vasishtha, the king Kaushika performed severe penance in order to become a Brahmarishi. He practised austerity for thousands upon thousands of years and gained great power through self-control. Seeing the strength of his penance, Indra was afraid. Thinking that his own position might be in danger, he called Menaka, an apsara of the heavenly world, and ordered her to disturb Vishwamitra's penance.

Menaka appeared before the sage as he bathed near the Pushkara tirtha. Her beauty and tenderness caught his eyes. The sage who had restrained his mind for so many years lost his firmness in a moment. He invited her to his hermitage. Ten years passed like one day, the Ramayana says.

One day when he woke, he realised that his penance had been disturbed. He understood Indra's stratagem. Although angry, tradition says he did not blame Menaka but lamented the weakness of his own mind. By his power he sent her away lovingly, went north to the Himalayas and began his penance again from the start.

In this story Vishwamitra's penance is like the raft of modesty and manly restraint in the verse. The flood of desire swept away in a moment that raft built over so many years. But he did not stop there; he rose and performed penance again. His greatness lay in acknowledging the fall and rising again.

What we learn from this is that any great achievement can falter at a moment of emotion. So both knowing ourselves and being careful, and rising again if we fall, are important.

To reflect on

Where in your life might a strong feeling quickly carry away a restraint you have spent years building, and what can you do before the flood comes?
