Explanation

A sigh sounds in this verse. Pandu udaiyen recalls the higher state he once held, and indru udaiyen names his state today. The power of the verse lies in setting the two against each other. Before, he had modesty and fine manliness; now only the palm-stalk. Nallaanmai is a manliness made up of firmness, self-restraint and noble conduct, not mere bodily strength. He remembers that once he had the strength to rule his own mind.

Sorrow and honesty mingle here. He does not hide his change; he frankly admits his state to himself. It means that love can alter a man's very nature. Yet he does not see the change as only a loss; he points to the beginning of a new state, indru udaiyen madal, "today I have the palm-stalk." He counts what he has gained along with what he has lost, but the gain brings more pain than joy.

The meaning for today is the honesty of knowing ourselves. The habit of seeing clearly how we were and how we have changed helps correct the mind. When love, anger or greed leads us astray, to admit it is the first step back. In this verse the hero makes that admission, but, sadly, he makes it only to grieve, not to return.

A story

Arjuna in the Garb of an Ascetic

In the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata comes the passage in which Arjuna undertakes a twelve-year pilgrimage. At one stage, at the festival on Mount Raivata near Dvaraka, he saw Subhadra, the sister of Krishna. The moment he saw her his heart was captured. Arjuna was a renowned warrior, famous for modesty, discipline and self-control. Yet now his mind wandered.

Without revealing his turmoil, he decided to stay in Dvaraka in the guise of an ascetic. Tradition says he stayed as an ascetic through the four months of the rains. During that time Krishna understood his state and smiled. Though Arjuna wore the dress of a renunciant outwardly, Krishna knew well that inwardly he was restless with love.

One day when Subhadra came to serve the ascetic, the story goes that Krishna told her the ascetic's true identity, and later, seeing that the two hearts had joined, he helped with their marriage. That Arjuna forgot his valour and his bow and lived in an ascetic's guise may seem a lowering of his station. But that simplicity revealed his true feeling.

The hero of the verse says, "Formerly I had modesty and fine manliness; today I have only the palm-stalk." Arjuna too, once a symbol of restraint, had to change his very situation for love. Both are examples of how much love can change a person.

What we learn from the story is that it is natural to change through love, but the glory lies in handling that change with honesty and respect. Arjuna chose not a deceitful path but the demanding path of an ascetic's guise to express his love.
