Explanation

Valluvar does not deny the pleasure of revenge. He admits that one who pays back harm with harm gets a kind of satisfaction at that moment. But he calls it orunaalai inbam, the pleasure of a single day: very brief and unstable. When the heat of anger cools, that pleasure vanishes, and what follows is regret, continued enmity and another counter-stroke. Nobody can say when this chain of revenge will end.

For the forbearing there is ponrum thunaiyum pugazh. Ponruthal means perishing, dying. One meaning is that he will have fame as long as he lives. Some commentators extend it to say the fame continues after death. In the short run forbearance may seem a loss: 'Why should I give way?' But reckoned over the long term it is the greater gain.

We can think of it as a small sum. Is it wise to buy enmity lasting for years for one day's pleasure? How profitable it is, on the other hand, to gain respect lasting for years by one day's patience! Valluvar points to the difference between short-term pleasure and long-term fulfilment. The same arithmetic applies to many decisions in life. It is a verse for the moment just before we hit send on the sharp reply, when the day's pleasure is in one hand and the years of fame in the other.

A story

Appar and Mahendravarman

This is the life of Thirunavukkarasar as told in Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam. Marulneekkiyar, born at Tiruvamur, joined the Jain faith in his youth and was known as Dharmasena. His elder sister Tilakavathiyar was a devotee of Shiva. Afflicted with a severe stomach illness through his sister's prayers, he sang to the Lord at Tiruvathigai and was cured. He then returned to the Shaiva path, and the Lord named him Navukkarasar, King of Speech.

At that time the Pallava king Mahendravarman followed the Jain faith. The Jains complained to him. In great anger the king ordered Navukkarasar to be brought. First they threw him into a lime kiln. He sat there singing "Maasil veenaiyum maalai madhiyamum", and the Purana says it turned into a cool grove.

Next they gave him poisoned milk. Thinking of the Lord, Navukkarasar drank it and suffered no harm. Then they set a rutting elephant on him. The elephant bowed to him and withdrew. Finally they tied a stone to him and cast him into the sea. As he sang the hymn "Sotrunai Vedhiyan", the stone itself became a raft and carried him ashore.

To all these cruelties Navukkarasar cursed no one and wished no ill to the king or the Jains. In his faith in the Lord he bore it all. In the end Mahendravarman, tradition says, realised his error, embraced the Shaiva path and built a temple at Tiruvathigai.

The pleasure of a day's revenge would have faded. But the fame of the forbearing Appar still resounds as Tevaram in every Shiva temple. He is a living example of the verse, 'fame until the end of life'.
