Explanation

The farmer cuts the earth's chest with the plough, the well-digger hollows its body, the builder lays his weight on it. Yet the earth does not resist anyone. It gives water to the digger, a harvest to the ploughman, a foundation to the builder. By choosing this image Valluvar shows forbearance as a productive quality, a creative strength. To forbear is not merely to stay quiet; it is the mind that answers even harm with good.

The word thalai means the best, the foremost. Ikazhvaar are those who revile or insult. To bear insult is not easy because it touches our self-respect. But when we react to insult we sink to the level of those who insulted us. Those who forbear guard their own dignity. Parimelazhagar and other commentators explain it as not planning harm against those who scorned us.

In practice, a superior at the office may speak sharply, a relative at home may jab at us, a stranger on the road may behave with contempt. If we blow up at each, our life will be full of quarrels. If, like the earth, we keep our calm and draw a clear boundary only where needed, both our relationships and our peace of mind will be protected. This is the message of the verse. The earth is not weak; it is the most stable thing we know, and the person who forbears takes on something of that stability for himself.

A story

Sita's Forbearance

This scene comes from the Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. After Ravana fell, Hanuman went to the Ashoka grove to give Sita the news of victory. Sita was speechless with joy. For ten months she had been a prisoner, guarded by fearsome rakshasi women.

Those rakshasis had threatened her every day and spoken contemptuously to her. "Marry Ravana, or we will eat you," they had said. Sita never answered back, nor did she curse them. She passed her days quietly in thoughts of Rama. Some of the rakshasis, moved by dreams, changed their minds and stood by her. One, Trijata, comforted her.

Hanuman said to her, "Lady, let me destroy with my own hands all these women who tormented you. Give me leave." His eyes blazed with anger. Sita calmed him. "Hero, these acted at the king's command. Servants cannot disobey their master's orders. I feel no anger toward them."

Then she told him a tale of a bear who sheltered a hunter chased by a tiger, and who, even when the hunter betrayed him, did not kill him. Sita ended, "The good protect even those who do wrong to them. Who in the world is without fault? Everyone has some." Hanuman marvelled at her generosity.

As the earth bears those who dig into it, Sita forgave even those who had tormented her. Her forbearance stands among the highest moral lessons of the Ramayana.

To reflect on

How could I bear, like the earth, someone who slighted me today?
