Explanation

Two levels are shown in this verse. The first is the harm that others do. Thiranalla means improper, unjust acts. When these are done to us it is natural to feel pain, and the words no nondhu refer to feeling that pain. Valluvar does not say, 'Do not feel the pain.' He says, 'Feel it.' The second level is our response. Even with that pain, he says, it is good that we ourselves do not do what is against dharma.

This is a very rare quality. Ordinarily, when someone harms us we also want to harm, and we look for a justification: 'He did it, so why should I not?' Valluvar does not accept that justification. Another's wrong does not give us the right to do wrong. Dharma concerns our own conduct and does not depend on the conduct of others. Some commentators read no nondhu as grieving over the suffering that will come to the wrongdoer, that is, feeling pity for the fruit of his deed.

In life today there is a common attitude: if someone spreads a lie about us we spread one too, and if someone cheats us we cheat. Going that way, both of us sink. We can choose our own dharma. That is why not returning evil for evil is good. It is a kind of freedom, because the one who refuses to copy the wrong is no longer being steered by the person who did it.

A story

Draupadi and Ashwatthama

This story comes from the Sauptika Parva of the Mahabharata. On the last night of the Kurukshetra war, Drona's son Ashwatthama resolved to avenge his father's death. When the Pandavas were away, he entered their camp and killed Dhrishtadyumna and Draupadi's five sons in their sleep. It was a vile act against the code of war.

On hearing the news in the morning Draupadi collapsed in shock. She had lost all five sons. The Pandavas went in search of Ashwatthama. He fled, hid at Vyasa's ashram, and hurled the Brahmashira weapon at the Pandavas. Arjuna countered with his own weapon. Vyasa and Narada came and told both to withdraw. Arjuna withdrew his; Ashwatthama could not. He turned it toward Uttara's womb, but Krishna protected the unborn child, Parikshit.

Bhima caught Ashwatthama, and Arjuna brought him bound and stood him before Draupadi. Krishna said that the gem on Ashwatthama's head could be taken. Bhima was ready to kill him. But Draupadi, who had lost her sons, looked at him and said, "Release him. He is Drona's son, the son of our teacher. His mother Kripi is still alive. She must not weep as I weep for my sons."

Even toward the one who had tormented her most cruelly, she did not abandon dharma. Her pain was immense, but out of that pain she did not demand revenge against dharma. The gem was taken from Ashwatthama's forehead, and he lived on under a curse, tradition says.

The world still praises this greatness of Draupadi, who felt the pain yet did nothing against dharma.
