Explanation

The last verse of the chapter restates the idea of the previous one in another form. To give up food and keep a fast is a hard austerity that strains the body. Valluvar accepts that it is worthy of honour, and calls those who do it periyar, great. But that greatness is of the second rank. The first place belongs to those who bear the harsh words of others. The word pin, 'after', expresses this.

Why is bearing words higher than fasting? In a fast a person restrains his bodily desire; the decision is his own and under his control. A harsh word spoken by another is not under our control. It comes at any time in an unexpected shape and touches our self-respect. To bear it takes more strength of mind than to restrain one's own desire. Commentators see in the comparison the idea that mental austerity is greater than bodily austerity.

This is clear in everyday life. Many people can go without food for a whole day. But if someone speaks sharply to them, anger bursts forth the next instant. A person who fasts should complete his fast and his good name with the patience to bear hard words. Only then is his greatness full. The verse closes the chapter by turning the usual measure of piety around: it asks not how much we deny ourselves but how much we can carry from others without turning bitter.

A story

The Ekadashi Fast

In Srirangam, on the bank of the Kaveri, lived an elderly woman named Ambujam. On every Ekadashi she fasted without food. On Vaikunta Ekadashi in particular, she kept awake all night reciting the names of Vishnu. The townspeople respected her devotion.

A woman in the next house often showed irritation toward Ambujam. There was no real reason; it was a squabble over where Ambujam drew her kolam at her doorstep. One day, the day before Vaikunta Ekadashi, the neighbour stood at the door and shouted abuse in a loud voice. "You pretend to fast. The fast is for show; inside is deceit. You are spoiling our doorway," she said, and a great deal more. Passers-by stopped for a few minutes to watch.

Ambujam's son tried to rush out in anger. Ambujam caught his hand. "Tomorrow is Ekadashi. On a fasting day we must not take hatred into the mind," she said softly. She went in and began to sing the Tiruvaymozhi. A few more minutes of abuse sounded at the door, and then silence.

At dawn on Ekadashi Ambujam went to the Ranganatha temple and walked with the crowd through the Paramapada Vasal. That day her mind was very full. More than the hunger of the fast, it was a great joy to her that she had let go of yesterday's words without storing them in her heart.

That evening the neighbour came by herself and took Ambujam's hand. "Mother, I was wrong yesterday. Your calm burned my heart," she said, weeping. Ambujam embraced her with a smile. That day the whole street talked about it: "To fast hungry was great, but to bear the words was greater.

To reflect on

Beyond my fasts and observances, which harsh word do I most need to practise bearing today?
