Explanation

In this verse Valluvar calls freedom from envy an ozhukkaaru, a path of conduct. Ordinarily we think conduct concerns acts: speaking the truth, not stealing, not killing. But here a state of mind is to be taken up as conduct. The words than nenjaththu, 'in his own heart', are very important. Envy may remain hidden in the heart. Even if the person harms no one, that irritation stains the mind. To remove that stain is conduct, he says.

Why does he treat it as conduct? Because a thought in the mind takes shape as action. Envy first appears as a thought, then as speech, then as deed, and finally as harm. If it is put out at the start, the later evils do not come. Commentators take ozhukkaaraak kolga to mean 'let it be kept as a rule of conduct', and there is a hint that it can be grown by practice.

In everyday life, when a neighbour buys a new vehicle, a colleague is promoted, or a relative builds a house, the mind sometimes shrinks for a moment. To notice that moment and turn the mind with the thought, 'That is the fruit of his labour,' is the practice of ozhukkaaru. That practice guards our peace of mind. It is a small, repeatable act, like straightening a picture that keeps going crooked, and its effect over a lifetime is large.

A story

Bharata's Generosity of Heart

This is the story of Bharata from the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana. After Rama went to the forest, the kingdom of Ayodhya came to Bharata: a great position that others do not get, the chance to sit on the throne and rule. But Bharata would not accept it. "How can I be king when my brother Rama is alive? This is not dharma," he said, even rebuking his own mother.

Bharata set out to bring Rama back from the forest. Seeing Rama he fell at his feet and wept. "Brother, come back. This kingdom is yours." When Rama refused to return, in order to keep his father's word, Bharata took his brother's sandals. He placed them on the throne and ruled in their name.

For fourteen years Bharata did not live in the palace of Ayodhya. At Nandigrama he lived in a small hut, wearing bark clothes, eating roots and fruit, with matted hair, like an ascetic. He did not take part in any festival in the city. Whenever he heard of Rama's fame his face brightened. There was not a drop of envy in his heart.

Rama's greatness did not irritate Bharata. He said openly, "My brother's rise is my rise." He lived to show that the mind that rejoices in the good fortune of others is the mind of right conduct.

When the fourteen years ended and Rama returned, Bharata gave back the kingdom without any regret and sat happily at his brother's feet. The world still honours Bharata, who made freedom from envy his rule of conduct.
