Explanation

To understand this verse we should note the phrase aran aakkam. Some read it as 'prosperity that comes through virtue', others as 'virtue and prosperity'. In either case, one who is envious acts so much against these that he may be said not to want them. Valluvar speaks somewhat severely here: the envious man is like one who does not desire any good for himself.

Why so? There is a way of gaining wealth by virtue and effort. Those who envy others' wealth do not walk that road but spend that energy in irritation. His attention is not on his own growth but on the fall of others, so he neglects his own virtue and progress. He is like a farmer who does not sow his field but grieves at the neighbour's harvest.

The relevance is clear today. A student who is burning at a classmate's success cannot give attention to his own studies. One who sets aside envy and thinks, 'I too can do what he did,' and goes to work, makes progress. Envy is a leak of energy; stop the leak and growth gains speed. The verse is practical advice at heart: the fastest route to the good we want is to stop spending our strength on the good others have.

A story

Indra and Menaka

This is the story of Vishvamitra and Menaka, told in the Bala Kanda of the Ramayana and in the Mahabharata. Vishvamitra was once the king Kaushika. After being defeated by Vasishtha he gave up his kingdom and went to perform severe austerities. Many years passed. As his tapas grew, his power grew, and he reached the rank of Rajarishi.

Indra, lord of the gods, saw this and was afraid. "If his tapas grows, my position will be in danger," he thought. This is a mind that does not cherish another's gain. The Puranas show again and again that Indra regards every austere person as a rival and is seized by envy and fear. He called Menaka, a dancer of his court, and sent her to disturb Vishvamitra's tapas.

Menaka came to earth and danced and sang where Vishvamitra was meditating. The story says Indra sent the wind and Kama as helpers to create a spring-like atmosphere. Vishvamitra opened his eyes and looked at Menaka. His tapas was broken. For many years he lived with her, and a daughter, Shakuntala, was born to them.

One day Vishvamitra realised that he had lost many years and rose in anger. Learning of Menaka and of Indra's scheme, he was furious. But instead of cursing, he quietly withdrew. He went again toward the north and performed still harsher tapas. In the end he attained the rank of Brahmarishi.

Indra's attempt to protect his position did not profit him. Vishvamitra rose in the end, and through Indra's act a lineage of Shakuntala and Bharata came into the world. By being unable to bear another's growth, Indra diminished his own fame, and acted as if he did not want dharma for himself.

How might I turn the energy I spend resenting another's growth towards my own?
