Explanation

This verse shows the uselessness of negligence through a comparison. Though a fearful person has a strong fort, he cannot use it. Out of fear he hides; he will not resist using the fort. In the same way, however much wealth and prosperity a negligent person has, it will not bring him good.

A fort is protection. But the benefit of protection depends on the mind that uses it. A fearful mind lives in fear even inside a fort; it may leave the gate unclosed; it may collapse before the enemy comes. A fort without firmness of mind is just stone.

Likewise 'nangu' denotes good, wealth, prosperity. The negligent forgets where he kept his wealth, forgets duties, forgets protective arrangements. Though wealth is with him, he can neither enjoy it nor make it last.

One idea unites both: the state of the mind matters more than external instruments. Fort and wealth are tools; the mind uses them. Fear and negligence are defects of the mind; if they are present the tools are of no use.

So a person, besides gathering external comforts, must develop courage and vigilance of mind. This is the subtlety of the verse.

Even in today's life, with the safest home, bank or computer system, a mind that does not attend to them suffers loss.

A story

Kamsa, Whose Fear Rendered His Fortress Useless

From the Bhagavata Purana (Tenth Skandha): Kamsa, king of Mathura, was extremely strong. He imprisoned his father Ugrasena and seized the throne. He had great guard for the palace, a fort for the city, an army and asura friends. Strong kings such as Jarasandha were related to him as fathers-in-law.

Kamsa married off his sister Devaki to Vasudeva. As he was sending her away after the wedding, a voice was heard from the sky: "Kamsa, her eighth son will kill you." In that moment Kamsa shook with fear. He even drew his sword to kill his sister. She lived because Vasudeva pleaded and promised to hand over the children that would be born.

From then on, Kamsa lived in fear. He imprisoned both Devaki and Vasudeva. He killed the six children that were born. Fearing that the eighth might escape, he posted thousands of guards. Though he had his fort, army and guard, there was no peace in his mind.

Fear confused his intellect. He tormented the people of Mathura; he sent asuras like Putana to kill all the children of the region. In his reign the people were disgusted. The fear in his mind rendered the strength of his fort ineffective.

On the night the eighth child, Krishna, was born, the prison doors opened by themselves. The guards fell into deep sleep. Vasudeva crossed the Yamuna with the infant and went to Gokula. Despite all the guards, that night no one was awake.

Krishna grew up, came to Mathura and slew Kamsa. All his army and fort did not protect him. A fearful mind had made the fortress useless.

Kamsa's life well shows that a fort is of no use to the fearful.
