Unforgetfulness

Pochchaavaamai

This chapter teaches ceaseless vigilance without forgetfulness or negligence. If one loses attention through elation and success, fame and wealth are ruined; if one keeps the intended work in mind and guards it, even the difficult becomes easy, says Valluvar.

Introduction

In 'Sutrandhazhaal' we learned to embrace kin. The next chapter is 'Pochchaavaamai'. 'Pochchaappu' means forgetfulness, negligence, carelessness, losing one's alertness by immersion in joy. 'Pochchaavaamai' is not forgetting in that way, being ever vigilant. It is a basic quality for governance and for life.

Many great falls came not from an enemy's strength but from one's own negligence. One with great wealth and a great army may lose everything if he lapses for a moment. Valluvar says that one who loses vigilance through joy in victory is in greater danger than one who loses it through grief in defeat. For the joy of victory is a sweet intoxication.

The first verse says that worse than excessive anger is the slackness that comes in joy. The second says forgetfulness kills fame. The third says, as a truth all texts accept, that the forgetful have no fame. The fourth says that as a fort is useless to the fearful, nothing good attends the forgetful. The fifth says one who does not guard in advance will later regret. The sixth says that never lapsing in alertness toward anyone is best. The seventh says that nothing is impossible if done with vigilance. The eighth tells us to carry out praiseworthy works with care. The ninth tells us to remember the ruined when elated. The tenth closes by saying that what one has intended is easy to attain if one keeps thinking of it.

The psychological subtlety of this chapter is notable. Negligence mostly comes at two moments: in the arrogance of victory and in the comfort of thinking oneself safe. So what Valluvar tells a leader is to be cautious not only about the enemy but also about the slackness of his own mind.

Forgetfulness and laziness are different. Laziness is not starting an act; forgetfulness is forgetting the act begun, the goal taken, and letting it slip. One way to avoid it is to keep the goal always in mind. The last verse says just that: if one keeps thinking of what he intended, he can easily attain it.

This chapter applies greatly to life today. A student relaxing after success in an exam, an entrepreneur delighted with growth who stops watching the accounts, a family that loses caution when comfort arrives: all are forms of pochchaappu.

Here Valluvar calls vigilance an instrument, 'pochchaavaak karuvi'. With that instrument in hand any rare task can be accomplished. So the essence of the chapter is to act always alert, not intoxicated by joy, with the goal in mind and guarding in advance.

Chapter story

King Parikshit's Lapse

From the Mahabharata and the Bhagavata Purana: After the Kurukshetra war Yudhishthira ruled for a long time. When he went to the Himalaya he handed the kingdom to Arjuna's grandson Parikshit. Parikshit, son of Abhimanyu, was attacked in Uttara's womb by Ashwatthama's Brahmastra. Krishna protected him. He ruled well and became famed; he even held back the beginning of the Kali age.

One day Parikshit went hunting in the forest. He chased a deer. Wandering all day, hunger, thirst and weariness afflicted him. Tormented by thirst he reached the hermitage of a sage. There the sage Shamika sat deep in meditation. The king asked him for water. Because the sage was in a vow of silence, he gave no reply.

Weariness and thirst broke his alertness and patience. Thinking himself ignored, the king lifted a dead snake lying nearby with the tip of his bow, put it on the sage's shoulder as a garland and left. He knew dharma, but at that moment anger and fatigue veiled his attention.

The sage's young son Shringi heard of it. Angered by the insult to his father, he cursed: "From today, on the seventh day let the snake Takshaka bite him and kill him." When Shamika finished meditation he rebuked his son, but the curse had been uttered. He sent word to the king.

The king realised his fault. Handing the kingdom to his son Janamejaya, he fasted on the bank of the Ganga. There the sage Shuka came and narrated the Bhagavata Purana to him for seven days. On the seventh day Takshaka came and bit him; Parikshit attained liberation.

A moment's inattention changed a great king and his life. Although Parikshit finally attained a good end, his mistake shortened his fame and his reign. The story shows the loss that comes when attention lapses in joy, fatigue or anger.

That is why Valluvar honours vigilance as an instrument. To remain unshaken at every time, and not to lose composure even when anger arises, is pochchaavaamai.

Another part of this story deserves thought. After erring, Parikshit did not try to hide or justify it. When the news of the curse came he accepted it and acknowledged his fault. This shows his high character. To accept responsibility even when a lapse has occurred is the mark of an alert mind. He did not waste the remaining seven days but used them seeking knowledge and God.

On the other side, the sage Shamika grieved over his son's curse. He felt that so great a punishment was not warranted for one small fault. It shows the negligence that seizes not only the one who errs but also the one who becomes angry watching it. Shringi too lost his vigilance in anger. So negligence grows harm on both sides.

Another episode in Parikshit's life is notable. He saw Kali in the form of a king tormenting a cow and a bull and stood against him. When Kali submitted and surrendered, Parikshit permitted him to dwell only in five places: gambling, liquor, lust, killing and gold. The Purana says that the Kali in gold later became the root of his lapse. One alert at the start fell when he relaxed.
