Explanation

This verse stresses the value of foresight. 'Munnurak kaavaadhu' means not guarding before harm comes. 'Izhukkiyaan' is one who was negligent. Such a one, after harm comes, will think of his own error and lament, says Valluvar.

'Pin ooru' is the harm that comes later. After that harm arrives all one can do is lament. The chance to guard before it has gone. One who did not build a dam before the flood gains nothing by grieving however much after the flood. One who did not care for health before illness suffers after it comes.

Here Valluvar teaches the wisdom of prevention. Guarding before is easy and less costly. Managing after is hard, costly and sometimes impossible. So the wise one takes precaution.

The word 'than pizhai', his own error, is very important. The bitterness of that lament is in realising it is not another's fault but his own. For he knows it could have been avoided. Avoidable suffering gives double sorrow.

So this verse asks us to think before beginning any action, 'What may happen?' Insurance, medical check-ups, maintenance of dams, preparation for exams are all ways of guarding beforehand.

This simple wisdom can help us avoid many sorrows in life.

A story

Dasharatha's Arrow and Shravana

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Ayodhya Kanda, sargas 63-64): After Rama went to the forest, King Dasharatha, grieving, remembered his youth. It was the memory of a mistake he had made. He told it to Kausalya and lamented. The cause of his curse was that.

When Dasharatha was a young man, on a rainy night he went hunting on the bank of the Sarayu. He was skilled in the art of 'shabdavedhi', striking a target by sound. In the dark, beside the river, he heard a sound like an elephant drinking water. Without confirming, he shot his arrow.

As the arrow hit, a human cry "Alas!" was heard. When Dasharatha ran and looked, a young ascetic, Shravana, lay fallen with an arrow in his chest. He had come to fetch water for his blind aged parents. Learning what he had done, Dasharatha trembled.

Before dying Shravana said, "Take this water to my parents and tell them the truth." When Dasharatha went so, the parents, hearing the news of their son's death, wailed. In the grief of losing a son, the father cursed Dasharatha: "You too will give up your life in grief for a son."

Dasharatha's mistake was to shoot, trusting only the sound, without precaution. Had he confirmed the target beforehand, that error would not have happened. Afterwards he regretted it all his life.

When Dasharatha gave up his life in the grief of separation from Rama, the curse of Shravana's parents was fulfilled. In those last days he may have thought, 'My error of not guarding beforehand now torments me.'
