Explanation

This verse praises the power of vigilance. Even acts called 'difficult' are not impossible when done carefully with the instrument of vigilance, says Valluvar. That is, difficulty lies not in the act but in the mind of the doer.

'Pochchaavaak karuvi' is a beautiful phrase. He regards vigilance and unforgetfulness as an instrument. An instrument is a device that eases an act. As a sword helps in war and a chisel in sculpture, vigilance helps in all acts. But it is not a tool held in the hand; it is a tool held in the mind.

'Potrich cheyin' is to do while guarding and nurturing. It is not leaving an act after beginning it but, at each stage, guarding it with attention and nurturing it until completion. Many great undertakings begin but are abandoned in the middle through forgetfulness or fatigue.

The verse instils hope. To a mind that thinks, "I cannot do this; it is too hard," it says that there is no act that cannot be done. Difficulty mostly comes from lack of sustained attention. With sustained attention even a mountain melts.

Yet vigilance here is not a magic spell. Knowledge, effort and proper time and place are also needed. But without vigilance all those are wasted.

So one with great goals should guard his mind from the enemy called forgetfulness. That is the instrument of unforgetfulness.

A story

Bhagiratha Who Brought the Ganga Down

From the Valmiki Ramayana (Bala Kanda) and the Bhagavata Purana: The sixty thousand sons of Sagara, king of the Solar dynasty of Ayodhya, were burned to ashes by the wrath of the sage Kapila. For their souls to reach a good state, Ganga's water had to touch their ashes. But Ganga was in the heavens. Bringing her down was thought an impossible, rare task.

Sagara tried and failed. His grandson Amshuman tried and failed. His son Dilipa tried and failed. Three generations, for a thousand years, performed austerities but could not bring Ganga. At last Dilipa's son Bhagiratha took up the responsibility. Others thought it was impossible. But Bhagiratha never forgot his goal.

He handed the governance to his ministers and went to the Himalaya. For a thousand years he performed severe austerities. Brahma appeared and said, "Ganga will agree to descend to earth; but earth cannot bear her force. Only Shiva can bear it." Bhagiratha again performed austerities to Shiva for a year.

Shiva agreed and held Ganga in his matted hair. Ganga wandered, whirling in his locks, for many years. After Bhagiratha pleaded again, Shiva released her in small streams. Ganga descended to earth. Bhagiratha went ahead in a chariot and Ganga followed him.

On the way the water flooded the hermitage of the sage Jahnu. In anger he swallowed Ganga. Bhagiratha pleaded with him, and Jahnu released her through his ear. In this way he patiently crossed many obstacles. At last in the netherworld Ganga bathed the ashes of Sagara's sons and freed them.

This great deed did not happen in an instant. After the failure of many generations, Bhagiratha, without forgetting his goal, crossed obstacles vigilantly, performed austerities and accomplished it. It is a witness that even the rare becomes easy through vigilance. To this day Ganga is called 'Bhagirathi'.

To reflect on

What goal seems impossible only because you have never held it in steady attention across the obstacles?
