Explanation

This verse tells the benefit of justice joined with love. The world will cling to the feet of the king who embraces his subjects, that is, who gathers them lovingly, and wields the sceptre, says Valluvar. 'Adi thazhuvudhal' is bowing at the feet and showing loyalty.

The phrase 'kudithazhiik kolochchum' is deep. It conveys that justice alone is not enough; love is needed with it. Some kings enforce the law, but rule by threat rather than with a cool heart. The king Valluvar describes rules while embracing his subjects. He is like a father to them.

People follow a king who rules with love not out of fear but out of affection. They themselves come and bow at his feet. Conquering by strength is one kind; conquering by love is a higher kind. The former ends when the war ends; the latter stands across generations.

'Maanila mannan' is the king who rules a great land. But the greatness of the land does not measure his greatness; the greatness of his heart decides his fame.

The word 'ulagu' refers to people everywhere. Not only his own countrymen but outsiders respect him. The fame of good governance spreads beyond borders.

What leaders should learn from this: authority on one side, love on the other. The one who joins both is accepted by the world as its leader.

A story

Dilipa Who Offered Himself for Nandini

From the Kamba Ramayana and Kalidasa's Raghuvamsha: Dilipa, king of the Solar line who ruled Ayodhya, loved his subjects deeply. He protected the people like a father. But he and his wife Sudakshina had no son for a long time. Worried, he went to the family preceptor Vasishtha.

Vasishtha said, "Once, when you were returning from the heavenly world, you passed by insulting Kamadhenu. By her curse you have no son. Her daughter Nandini is with me. If you serve her and she is pleased, a son will be born to you." Dilipa served the cow with his wife.

Each day when Nandini went to graze, Dilipa followed like a shadow. Giving up the status of king, he walked as a herdsman. He gave the strength of his shoulders for her protection. This is a sign of how he cared with love for his subjects and for all lives that trusted him.

On the twenty-first day, as Nandini grazed near a cave in the Himalaya, a lion leapt and seized her. Dilipa took up the bow to shoot, but his hand became powerless. The lion said in a human voice, "I am Shiva's servant. This cow is destined as my food."

Dilipa did not hesitate to offer his life. "I have a duty to protect my subjects and the lives that trust me. Let go of this cow and make me your food," he said. He placed his body before the lion. At that moment the lion vanished; it had been a test scene created by Nandini. Nandini blessed him. A noble son, Raghu, was born to him.

Dilipa is an ideal of a king who rules embracing not only his subjects but every life that trusts him, and whom the world embraces and praises. His descendants were the famed line of Raghu, Aja, Dasharatha and Rama.

Do the people who depend on you feel embraced by you, or only governed by you?
