Explanation

This verse points to two faults together: a harsh tongue and a lack of compassion. Harshness of word is a fault of the mouth; lack of compassion is a fault of the mind. One who has no pity in the mind will have no sweetness in speech, and so the two come together. 'Kan' here means not only the eye but grace. One without the eye of grace is 'kannilan'.

The phrase 'needinri aange kedum' shows Valluvar's certainty. Helpers are afraid to tell the truth to a leader who speaks harshly. So he does not learn how his wealth is being wasted or where it leaks. Good advisers leave, and cheats draw near. For wealth to last, the knowledge and trust that manage it are needed, and both grow on kind speech and compassion.

This is why elders warned of the wound that the tongue inflicts, which is slow to heal. Valluvar's word 'aange', meaning 'right there', stresses that the consequence does not wait. A merchant or a household stands on relationships, and once the tongue cuts them, whatever has been gathered begins to melt on that spot.

It holds in daily life too. Customers do not return to a harsh shopkeeper. Capable people do not stay with a harsh manager. Wealth is not money alone; it includes good relationships and a good name. The man without a kind word loses these first, and only afterwards the money.

A story

Nahusha's Fall

From the Mahabharata: Nahusha, a king of the lunar line, had earned great merit. When Indra lost his position for a time, the gods and sages seated Nahusha himself on Indra's seat. He had gained that height through austerity and righteousness. Indra's wealth, the glory of his court and the authority over heaven all came to him.

But he lacked the maturity to carry such wealth. Before long arrogance entered his heart. His speech grew harsh, and he began to give orders to sages without mercy. Desire for Indra's queen Shachi also rose in him. To go to her he wished to ride in a palanquin borne by sages.

The sages accepted his order and carried him. Seated in the palanquin, Nahusha hurried them to go faster. Among the bearers was the sage Agastya. Losing patience, Nahusha cried 'sarpa, sarpa', meaning 'move, move', and tradition adds that he even touched Agastya with his foot.

Agastya, enraged, cursed him: 'May you become a serpent.' In an instant Nahusha fell from Indra's seat and became a snake. His vast wealth and rank did not last. The Mahabharata adds that later, through the wise answers of Yudhishthira, the curse was lifted.

The tale of Nahusha is witness that with harsh speech and absence of compassion, the highest post and the greatest riches can collapse then and there. 'Needinri aange kedum' fits him exactly.
