Explanation

However much we explain our sorrow or need, some people do not understand; others understand without our saying a word. If we find such a person in life, we have no need to explain; it is enough to stand before him. Valluvar says 'it is enough to stand looking at the face'. It is a verse of great comfort. However complex the situation that comes in life, having someone who understands us is strength enough.

'Looking into the heart' means looking at the inner self. Such a person does not hear our words; he hears our heart. He does not see our appearance; he sees our sorrow. 'Understanding what has befallen' means sensing what has happened to us, so we need not tell him. This kind of relationship is found between teacher and student, mother and child, and close friends.

There is another side. We too should try to be such a person to others. When someone comes and stands before us unable to speak, to look at his face, sense his need and come forward to help is a very great service. So reading signs is not only a comfort we receive; it is a comfort we give.

A story

Shabari and Rama

From the Aranya Kanda of the Ramayana. While searching for Sita, Rama and Lakshmana reached the hermitage of the sage Matanga on the bank of the Pampa. There an old woman, Shabari, had waited for years for Rama's coming. She was Matanga's disciple, and when the sage was leaving his body he had told her, 'Rama will one day come here; after seeing him you will attain the highest goal.'

Every day Shabari made the hermitage fragrant, gathered wild fruits and waited. Days became years and old age drew near. But her faith did not wane. One day she saw Rama and Lakshmana approaching. Words would not come to her; tears streamed down. She fell at their feet in worship.

She did not explain her love in words. She gave no long discourse. With hands trembling with joy she brought the fruits she had gathered and placed them before Rama. Tradition says she chose and set aside only the sweetest, having tasted them. Rama saw only her love. He did not look at the manner of her act or at the nature of the fruit.

Rama accepted them with joy. He felt in her face the devotion, the weariness of waiting and the gratitude. She said not a word, and he asked her nothing. It was enough to stand looking at her face. Her penance was fulfilled in that moment.

Afterwards, the Ramayana says, Shabari gave up her body in the fire and attained the highest state. Rama, who understood and accepted what she did not say, gives life to the verse 'it is enough to stand looking at his face'.
