Explanation

The plain meaning of this verse is simple: the distinction gained by those who live happily in this world is the fruit of a way of life settled in love. Without love, happiness does not last; that is its message.

For 'anbutru amarndha vazhakku', Parimelazhagar explains it as the way of household life filled with love and settled in it. The word 'amarndha' is important; it means settled, rooted, living in it. Not a passing love, but love that has become a way of life.

Those called 'inbutraar' are not merely people with wealth; they are those with joy in the heart. If one asks how they gained that distinction, Valluvar says a life full of love is the cause.

Another meaning is also given for this verse. It is that the fruit of love shows as happiness in this very world, not only in the next. So love is like an investment whose interest is paid in this world.

Modern psychological studies too say that the secret of happiness lies not in money or fame but in the quality of relationships. Valluvar said it centuries ago.

In a home full of love, joy is full even if wealth is little. In a home without love, emptiness remains though wealth is full. So this verse tells the secret of the sweetness of household life.

Appoodi Adigal lived with love as his very way of life. His story is a great illustration of this verse.

A story

Appoodi Adigal and Tirunavukkarasar

The Periya Puranam tells the story of the Nayanar Appoodi Adigal. Appoodi Adigal was a brahmin living in Tingalur. Having heard the fame of Tirunavukkarasar, he came to love him without measure, though he had never seen him. Out of that love he set up water sheds, feeding halls and tanks in the name of Tirunavukkarasar.

One day Tirunavukkarasar came to Tingalur and saw the water shed bearing his own name. Surprised, he asked the reason; Appoodi Adigal grew angry. "How can you ask this, not knowing the glory of Appar Peruman!" he said. Then, learning that he was Tirunavukkarasar himself, he was lost in joy and arranged a feast at his house.

To pick a plantain leaf for the feast, the eldest son of Appoodi Adigal went to the garden. A cobra bit him there. The boy bore the pain, handed the leaf to his mother and died. Appoodi Adigal and his wife understood what had happened. But lest the feast be interrupted, and so that Tirunavukkarasar should not know, they rolled the body of the child in a mat and hid it.

As the food began to be served, Tirunavukkarasar said, "Call your eldest son." Appoodi Adigal faltered. "He cannot help now," he said. Tirunavukkarasar read the truth on his face. Learning it, he had the body brought, sat down there and sang the hymn beginning 'Onru kolam'.

Before the song ended the poison left the boy. He rose as if from sleep. Appoodi Adigal had not wept over his loss; he had been troubled only that the feast might be disturbed.

When love takes hold of a person so completely, it becomes his very way of life. Appoodi Adigal cared more that his beloved guest should not be hurt than for the life of his child. That way of love gave him the exalted rank of a Nayanar.

To reflect on

Has love become a way of life for me, or is it something I show only on special occasions?
