Explanation

This verse sees love as an inner organ of the body. However beautiful the outer limbs, eyes, ears, hands and feet, Valluvar asks what use they are if the inner organ called love is not in the heart.

'Puraththuruppu' are the limbs seen outside. 'Agaththuruppu' is the vital organ within, like the heart that makes life work. He likens love to it. As the body cannot work without the heart, humanity cannot work without love.

The beauty of the verse is in its comparison. The outer limbs give appearance and action; the inner organ gives life. Even with a beautiful, strong, healthy body, without love it remains an empty shell.

Another meaning is also given. 'Yaakkai agaththuruppu anbu' is 'the organ within the body is love', that is, the true organ of the body is love itself. Parimelazhagar explains it as: the inner organ of the body is love.

Today's world gives much importance to outward appearance. Many treat beauty, clothes, ornaments and fame as great. The verse gently corrects this: true excellence is within.

Even if one's outward appearance has flaws, if one is full of love, he is beautiful. One who looks beautiful but has no love is empty however beautiful he may be.

The meeting of Krishna with Kubja is a fine story showing the truth of this verse.

A story

Kubja and Krishna

The tenth book of the Bhagavata Purana tells of a sweet event in Mathura. Krishna and Balarama accepted Kamsa's invitation and came to the city of Mathura. As they went along its street they saw a washerman, and then met a garland-maker. Next, a woman came toward them carrying sandal paste.

Her name was Kubja. Her body was bent at the back, neck and waist, which is how she got the name Kubja. She was a servant who ground sandal for Kamsa. People sometimes mocked her. But her heart was full of love.

Krishna asked her with a smile, "Beautiful one, for whom is this sandal paste? Will you not give us a little too?" No one had ever called her "beautiful". Her heart melted. "It is for Kamsa; but it is you who deserve it. You are beautiful," she said, and lovingly anointed Krishna and Balarama with her sandal.

Krishna was pleased. With two fingers he lifted her chin and gently pressed her feet and straightened her. Her body became upright. She became beautiful in form, says the Bhagavata. She lovingly invited Krishna to her home. Krishna said, "I shall come when my work is done," it is said.

Though Mathura had many rich people, beauties and great men, Krishna's love went to a simple woman with a bent body. Krishna did not look at her appearance; he saw only the inner organ of her love.

In that scene the people of Mathura realised what true beauty is. Forgetting the flaw in her body, they saw how bright the love of her heart was.

The message of the story is that love fills the flaw of the outside, but no outer beauty can fill the lack inside.

To reflect on

When I judge someone, am I looking at their outward form or at what is within?
