Explanation

This couplet states the firmness of the well-born. Even if crores upon crores of wealth were within reach, they would not consent to any act that diminishes family honour. "Kunruva" means acts that lower one's good name. Such an act may be a lie, a small cheat, or a betrayal of trust. The mind of the well-born is that however great the desire for wealth, good name cannot be put up for sale.

Its depth lies in the struggle between desire and honour. When a great sum lies before the eyes and only one small wrong is needed to take it, many stumble. But the well-born think of their ancestors. They fear that if they do this deed the name built by their father and grandfather will fall. So for them name is greater than money.

In the Mahabharata, Karna is a great example. When Krishna himself came, told Karna that he was the eldest of the Pandavas, and tempted him with a kingdom and a fine life, Karna refused to forget his debt of gratitude to his friend Duryodhana.

Some commentators take the couplet as natural strength of mind, others as a moral training that recalls the ancestors' name. In both, the honour of one's name is higher than the longing for money.

A story

Karna's Gratitude

In the Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata, before the war of Kurukshetra began, Krishna went to Hastinapura as the envoy of peace. Duryodhana did not accept peace. On the way back Krishna took Karna aside and spoke privately. He told Karna a great secret: "Karna, you think you were raised in a charioteer's family. In truth you are Kunti's firstborn, a son of the Sun god. You are the eldest of the Pandavas."

Krishna went on: "If you come to the Pandavas' side, Yudhishthira will make you king. Draupadi will accept you as her sixth husband. The five will honour you as their elder brother. You will stand on the side of dharma. Wealth, fame and kingdom will be yours." This was no ordinary temptation. Karna had suffered lowliness and insult all his life. For him it was a very great chance.

Karna stood silent for a moment. Then he said slowly: "Krishna, I know what you say is true. But Duryodhana made me king of Anga. When everyone looked on me with contempt, he accepted me as a friend. If I forget that gratitude, my life has no meaning. Even if I die, I will fight for him."

Krishna wondered at his firmness. Karna knew that the result of his decision was death for himself. Kunti too later came to him and begged him to spare her sons. He promised that he would kill none of the other four except Arjuna. Though Karna's choice was flawed, his steadfastness in refusing wealth and kingdom for gratitude recalls the "kodi perinum" of the couplet. His firmness in guarding his honour deserves praise.

To reflect on

What is the "price" at which you would quietly let your good name slip, and have you ever tested whether it is higher or lower than you think?
