Explanation

"Masatra kulam patri vaazhdum" expresses the resolve to live holding fast to a stainless family honour. Those with such resolve will not use "salam", deceit and trickery, to do "salpilavai", acts unbecoming of the worthy. If a man truly honours his family's eminence, his actions will match it. Situations may arise where deceit would bring great gain. At that moment it is the sense of family honour that holds him back.

The subtlety is that family honour acts as an armour. It is not a rule imposed from outside but a faith that arises from within. The thought "we are such a family; we will not do this" refuses wrong chances automatically. This is stronger than law, since it works even when no one is watching.

In Hindu tradition Arjuna is a rare example. Some commentators take "salam" as deceit, others as enmity or anger. Whichever, one attached to family honour will avoid low ways.

This matters greatly in life today. In business and in work, shortcuts always look attractive. When the thought "no one will know" comes, the memory "this is not what my family taught me" stops a person. That memory is the greatest property a family gives its children. A home that nurtures it also gives society reason to trust. Arjuna had all the pleasures of Indra's world before him, yet did not give up his family dharma, and the Mahabharata recalls this as a proof of his self-control.

A story

Arjuna and Urvashi

In the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata comes the episode of Arjuna going to Indra's world to receive divine weapons. He stayed in Indra's palace and learned music and dance from the gandharva Chitrasena. One day Indra held a dance contest to celebrate Arjuna's valour. There the apsara Urvashi saw him and fell in love. That night she came to Arjuna's chamber.

Urvashi revealed her desire. Arjuna at once rose and bowed to her. "Lady, you were the wife of Pururavas, the ancestor of our Puru line. So you are like a mother to our family. I see you only as a mother," he said. Urvashi argued, "We are apsaras; we have no such relationships. This is the custom of heaven."

Arjuna said again, gently but firmly, "Lady, whatever your custom, my family dharma matters most to me. I will do nothing that stains the name of the Puru line." Urvashi burned with anger. "Because you refused my invitation, you will for a year be like one without manhood, a teacher of dance," she cursed him.

Indra learned of it, reduced Urvashi's curse to a single year, and said Arjuna could use it at a time of his choosing and that it would do him good. Later, in the year of incognito exile of the Pandavas, Arjuna lived hidden at the court of Virata under the name Brihannala, teaching dance to the women of the palace. The curse helped him hide. Arjuna did not lose his family honour for a single moment. Neither deceit nor desire moved him; family dharma protected him.

To reflect on

What is the sentence you tell yourself, "people like us do not do this," and does it hold when no one is looking?
