Explanation

It is easy to give when wealth is abundant. Valluvar shows here that true family honour is to keep the giving nature even when wealth has fallen and poverty has come. In "vazhanguvadhu ul veezhndhak kannum" there is the sense that the means of giving have fallen inward, that is, decreased. Even then the "pazhangudi", the family that has long kept good qualities, does not give up its natural generous heart. What they possess may shrink, but the giving mind does not.

The phrase "panbil thalaippirithal" is important. To part from the head is to move away from the basic quality. Wealth comes and goes, but character stays. If the family's character is giving, it continues even in poverty. Society honours not the man who gives when he has wealth but the man who, having nothing, shares even his last handful.

In Hindu tradition the story of Rantideva is the best witness. The Bhagavata Purana (9.21) shows him as a king who did not give up giving even when he became destitute. The Mahabharata too mentions him as a man of great fame.

Some commentators take "vazhanguvadhu" to mean giving, others also hospitality and family customs. Both point to the same family tradition.

A story

Rantideva's Gift

In the ninth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana comes the story of King Rantideva. He was a great dharmic king of the lunar line. He gave away all the wealth he had, until at one point nothing was left. He went to the forest with his family and lived a simple life. He never thought of his giving with regret.

For forty-eight days neither he nor his family had food to eat. On the morning of the forty-ninth day someone offered a little gruel with milk and ghee, and water. Just as he was about to eat, a brahmin came as a guest asking for food. Rantideva gladly gave him a part of his share.

When he had gone, he began to eat what was left. Then a poor man came and asked for food. He gave him a share too. Then a man came with dogs and said, "My dogs are hungry." He gave what remained to him as well. Last, a man living outside the village community came and asked for water because of thirst. Rantideva gave even the last of his water to him. "Hunger and thirst are not great to me; my joy is in relieving the suffering of others," he said.

The three great gods had been testing his nature, and they had come in the form of those guests. Seeing his firmness they appeared in person and praised him. They granted him liberation. His nature of not giving up giving even in poverty is the finest witness to Valluvar's "pazhangudi panbil thalaippirithal indru." All who came after him in his line kept the same nature as a tradition.
