Explanation

The final couplet of the chapter places two counsels together. First, one who desires goodness must cultivate modesty. Here "nalam" means both good character and well-being. Modesty is the feeling of shame at evil. For one without modesty, goodness is hard to reach. Second, one who desires family honour must cultivate humility toward all. Humility is the quality of not exalting oneself but honouring others.

The phrase "yaarkkum panivu", humility to everyone, is notable. Humility is due not only to the high but to all. The true man of good family bows even to the poor, the simple and the young. When wealth and position come, pride comes easily; keeping humility then is the way of guarding family honour. Humility is not weakness but a sign of strength.

In Hindu tradition there is the saying "vidya dadati vinayam", learning gives humility, meaning one of high learning is humble. In the Gita Krishna says the wise see all beings equally (5.18). Some commentators take "nalam" as well-being, others as virtue. In both, the place where modesty and humility meet is the summit of kudimai.

This couplet gathers in one line what the whole chapter said. Kudimai lies not in the name, wealth or office; it lies in modesty and humility. If these two are present, the other qualities of rectitude, conduct, truth, giving and sweet speech come of themselves. One who wishes to honour a family should first grow these two in himself, and that is Valluvar's closing guidance.

A story

Krishna's Humility at the Rajasuya

In the Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata comes the scene of the Rajasuya sacrifice at Indraprastha. Kings, sages, brahmins and common people from all over the world came to that great sacrifice by which Yudhishthira was to become emperor. Guests gathered in thousands. A task was assigned to each. Bhishma and Drona supervised the sacrifice. Duryodhana took charge of the treasury. Dushasana oversaw the food.

Among these tasks, Krishna, king of Dvaraka and friend of emperors, took upon himself a humble duty: washing the feet of the brahmins who came. Though surrounded by great kings, he bent in simple manner and washed the feet of the guests with his own hand. The sages and poor brahmins who had come looked on in wonder. Some, out of shyness, drew back their feet. Krishna gently stopped them, saying, "Do not be afraid; this is my good fortune," washed their feet, dried them and bowed. "Is this the Lord of the world?" they thought.

Someone asked him, "Krishna, you are the Lord the world worships. Why did you take such a task?" Krishna said with a smile, "Before dharma all tasks are equal. To bow to others is no loss to me; it is my glory." His humility touched the hearts of everyone in the assembly.

This scene is regarded as the finest sight of that sacrifice. When the high bows, he rises higher. Not to grow proud of birth, fame and wealth but to bow to all is the summit of kudimai. This scene stands as the living form of Valluvar's closing counsel, "kulam vendin venduga yaarkkum panivu."
