Explanation

This ten names what should not be blamed. It is unwise to blame a person's nature, a lack of gifts they never had, the high price of a rare thing, the flaws of unfinished work, the customs of an unknown land, or a poor man's inability to give. Rather than stay in a lawless king's land and complain, one should leave. The great bear even with the ways of lesser people. The heart of it is to understand others in their own situation.

From the Periya Puranam (the life of Kannappa Nayanar)

The Devotion of Kannappa

From the Periya Puranam. Thinnan, a young hunter, saw the Shiva linga on the hill of Kalahasti and melted with love. In the way of his people he offered meat he had tasted first, bathed the linga with water carried in his mouth, and adorned it with flowers from his own hair. Sivagochariyar, the Brahmin priest who worshipped there daily, was deeply troubled by this. The Lord appeared in his dream and said, 'Hide and watch his love.' The next day blood flowed from one eye of the linga. Thinnan tried remedy after remedy, and when nothing stopped it he dug out his own eye with an arrow and placed it there. The bleeding stopped. Then the other eye began to bleed. Setting his foot on the linga's eye to mark the spot, he began to remove his second eye. The Lord said three times, 'Stop, Kannappa,' and held his hand. From that day he was Kannappar.

To reflect on

Sivagochariyar first saw only unfamiliar custom; the Lord showed him love. That is the poet's point too: do not rush to blame what looks strange, but look for the heart behind it. Whom have I been too quick to blame?
