ஆயிரம் மாமறைக்கும் அலங்காரம் அருந்தமிழ்க்குப்பாயிரம் நாற்கவிக்குப் படிச்சந்தம் பனுவற்கு எல்லாம்தாய்இரு நாற்றிசைக்குத் தனித்தீபம் தண்ணங்குருகூர்ச்சேயிரு மாமரபும் செவ்வியான் செய்த செய்யுட்களே.

குளிர்ந்த அழகிய குருகூரில் தோன்றிய, இரண்டு பெரும் மரபுகளையும் சிறப்பிக்கும் அழகனாகிய நம்மாழ்வார் செய்த செய்யுள்கள்: ஆயிரம் கிளைகளுடைய பெரிய வேதத்துக்கு அலங்காரம்; அரிய தமிழுக்குப் பாயிரம்; நால்வகைக் கவிதைகளுக்கும் முன்மாதிரியான சந்தம்; எல்லா நூல்களுக்கும் தாய்; பெரிய நான்கு திசைகளுக்கும் ஒப்பற்ற விளக்கு.

Meaning

The verses made by the beautiful one of cool, lovely Kurugur, glory of two great lineages, are: an ornament to the great Veda of a thousand branches; a preface to rare Tamil; the model rhythm for the four kinds of poetry; a mother to all scriptures; and a peerless lamp for the four wide directions.

இந்தப் பாடலில் கம்பர் திருவாய்மொழிக்கு ஐந்து பட்டங்கள் தருகிறார். வேதத்துக்கு அலங்காரம்: வேதம் ஏற்கெனவே பெரியது; திருவாய்மொழி அதை அழகுபடுத்துகிறது. தமிழுக்குப் பாயிரம்: தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தைப் படிக்கத் தொடங்கும் முன்னுரை போன்றது. கவிதைக்கு முன்மாதிரி. நூல்களுக்குத் தாய். திசைகளுக்கு விளக்கு.

"தனித்தீபம்" என்பது முக்கியம். நான்கு திசைகளிலும் இருள் சூழ்ந்திருக்கும்போது ஒரே ஒரு விளக்கு போதும்; அதன் ஒளியில் வழி தெரியும். குருகூரில் ஏற்றிய அந்த விளக்கு உலகம் முழுதும் ஒளிர்கிறது.

Explanation

In this verse Kambar gives the Thiruvaimozhi five titles. An ornament to the Veda: the Veda is already great, and the Thiruvaimozhi adorns it. A preface to Tamil: like the introduction one reads before entering Tamil literature. A model for poetry. A mother to books. A lamp for the directions.

'Thaniththeepam', the peerless lamp, matters most. When darkness lies on all four sides, a single lamp is enough; by its light the way is seen. The lamp lit at Kurugur shines over the whole world.

ஆழ்வார்திருநகரி மரபு

குருகூருக்கு எழுந்தருளும் ஒன்பது பெருமாள்கள்

ஆழ்வார்திருநகரி மரபிலிருந்து. தாமிரபரணி ஆற்றின் இரு கரைகளிலும், ஆழ்வார்திருநகரியைச் சுற்றி ஒன்பது வைணவத் திருத்தலங்கள் உள்ளன. அவை "நவ திருப்பதிகள்" எனப்படுகின்றன: ஸ்ரீவைகுண்டம், நத்தம், திருப்புளிங்குடி, பெருங்குளம், இரட்டைத் திருப்பதி இரண்டு, தென்திருப்பேரை, திருக்கோளூர், ஆழ்வார்திருநகரி. இவை அனைத்தையும் நம்மாழ்வார் பாடியுள்ளார்.

ஒவ்வோர் ஆண்டும் வைகாசித் திருவிழாவில் ஒரு அரிய காட்சி நடக்கிறது. ஒன்பது கோயில்களின் பெருமாள்களும் கருட வாகனங்களில் ஆழ்வார்திருநகரிக்கு எழுந்தருளுகின்றனர். அங்கே நம்மாழ்வார் அன்ன வாகனத்தில் எழுந்தருளி, அவர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவரையும் பற்றித் தாம் பாடிய பாசுரங்கள் ஓதப்படுகின்றன. ஒன்பது பெருமாள்களும் ஓர் அடியாரைக் காண வருகின்றனர்.

இறைவனே தேடி வரும் அடியார் நம்மாழ்வார். கம்பர் அவர் பாடல்களை "இரு நாற்றிசைக்குத் தனித்தீபம்" என்கிறார். அந்த விளக்கைக் காண ஒன்பது திசைகளிலிருந்தும் இறைவன் வருகிறான்.

Nine Lords Come to Kurugur

From the tradition of Alwarthirunagari. On both banks of the Thamirabarani around Alwarthirunagari stand nine Vaishnava shrines, called the Nava Tirupathis: Srivaikuntam, Natham, Thirupulingudi, Perungulam, the two shrines of Irattai Tirupathi, Thenthiruperai, Thirukkolur and Alwarthirunagari itself. Nammalvar sang of all of them.

Every year at the Vaikasi festival a rare sight unfolds. The Lords of all nine temples come to Alwarthirunagari on Garuda mounts. Nammalvar comes out on a swan mount, and the hymns he sang about each of them are recited. Nine Lords come to see one devotee.

Nammalvar is a devotee whom God himself comes seeking. Kambar calls his songs 'a peerless lamp for the four directions'; to see that lamp, the Lord comes from every side.
