Explanation

The word 'adungaalai' in this verse has two meanings. Some take it as 'the hour of death'; others as 'the time when suffering afflicts'. The sense is the same: the friendship of those who forsook us in ruin burns the heart even when merely remembered later. Even after wounds heal, the memory remains an unhealed scar. It is a wound made not by words but by abandonment.

Valluvar gives here another reason for examining friends. When someone abandons us, the pain does not end with the loss; the memory lives a long time in our heart. It burns the mind for a lifetime. To avoid such pain beforehand, we must examine before forming a friendship.

This verse also holds a mirror to each of us. When we recall whom we left without helping, the question arises whether our memory burns in that person's heart. So the verse is a warning not only about others but about our own conduct.

It teaches a grace of memory as well. Those who have been abandoned must find a way not to be consumed by the burning, and forgiving is partly an act of self-care. Yet forgiveness does not require us to trust again; we can release the anger and still decline the friendship.

A story

Harishchandra Abandoned

The story of Harishchandra is greatly honoured in the Puranas. Harishchandra, a king who never swerved from truth, lost his kingdom through the trial set by Vishvamitra. He sold his wife Chandramati and his son Lohitashva, and became a servant himself in Kashi. In the end he took up the duty of guarding the cremation ground.

When he lived in royal state, many in his court sang his praises. They received his gold and gifts. But when he lost everything not one of them came to look for him. Knowing his distress they turned away and ignored it. The only help in that state was Chandramati's firmness.

One day, as Harishchandra stood guard at the burning ground, a woman came with her dead son. She was Chandramati and the dead boy was their son Lohitashva. Though in grief, Harishchandra did his duty: he said the body could not be burned without the cremation-ground tax. Chandramati offered her marriage thread as the fee. At last, tradition says, the gods appeared, declared his trial over, and restored the boy to life.

In this story Harishchandra may have remembered the court companions who forsook him in his fall. Yet he did not nourish bitterness; he held fast only to his resolve for truth. Tradition praises him thus.

The tale quietly shows how deep is the pain of remembering those who left in the time of ruin. The strength to bear that pain comes from truth alone. And it brings Valluvar's warning: friendship should be formed only after careful examination.

To reflect on

Is there someone whose desertion you still remember with burning, and what would letting that go look like?
