Explanation

The final verse of this chapter gives a clear conclusion: join the faultless; leave the unworthy. In both acts the word 'onreeththum' appears, 'even by giving something'. That one should pay a price to gain the friendship of a good person is easy to understand. The depth of the verse is that one may also have to pay a price to leave the friendship of the wicked. In breaking a long relationship there can be small losses: money, kinship, social esteem. We must bear them and come out of evil friendship.

'Maasatraar' are the faultless, those who are pure in mind, word and deed. For 'oppilaar' the commentators give two senses: one who is not equal to us, or one whose smallness has no comparison. In either case it means unfit for friendship.

With this verse Valluvar ends the chapter on examining friends with a practical command. If examination does not lead to action, the examination is wasted. Moving towards the good and withdrawing from the wicked must become decisions of everyday life. It takes courage to join and to part. Those who have that courage stand on the side of goodness.

The verse thus completes a circle which began with 'do not befriend without examining'. Examination, selection, joining and leaving: these are the four movements of a wise social life. A person who has practised all four will not be often deceived, and will be a safe companion for others.

A story

Arjuna Chooses Krishna

When the Mahabharata war became certain, both the Pandavas and Kauravas decided to go to Dwaraka and seek Krishna's support. Arjuna and Duryodhana arrived in Dwaraka on the same day. Krishna was then asleep. Duryodhana came first and sat on a high seat at his head. Arjuna stood humbly at his feet with folded hands.

When Krishna opened his eyes he saw first Arjuna standing before him, and then Duryodhana seated at his head. He asked the purpose of the visit. Both said they wanted his help. Krishna said, "I saw Arjuna first, but Duryodhana came first. So both have the right to choose. On one side is my mighty Narayani army; on the other is myself alone, unarmed and not taking part in the fight. Since he is the younger, let Arjuna choose first."

Arjuna, without hesitation, said, "You alone are enough for me, Krishna." He chose friendship over an army. Duryodhana was delighted. Thinking, "He is a fool, choosing one man over the army," he took the Narayani Sena for himself.

By the end of the war it was clear that what Arjuna chose was greater than an army. It was Krishna who stood as charioteer at Kurukshetra and guided him, and the Gita was born there. It showed that a good companion can overcome the largest army.

Arjuna's choice is an excellent example of 'maruvuga maasatraar kenmai onreeththum'. By giving up an entire army he gained a faultless friend.
