Explanation

This verse gives the content of the examination by listing four things to look at. First, 'gunam', a person's native character: patience, honesty, kindness, anger. Second, 'kudimai', the tradition and upbringing of the family he was born into. Third, 'kutram', his faults: everyone has some, but we must see what they are and whether they harm us and our families. Fourth, 'inam', the kin and friends with whom he moves.

'Kunraa inam' is read in two ways: the unfailing circle of kin, or the company without deficiency. A proverb says that seeing a person's friends tells half of his mind. A person tends to become like those with whom he joins. It is therefore useful to examine the company.

The word 'kudimai' should not be taken only as pride of high birth. More important than what family a person was born in is what virtues his family cherished and how well he keeps them. In today's life it is hard to know all four before making someone a friend, but we should try as far as we can.

Valluvar's list is also a mirror. Each of these four qualities is something we in turn show to others: our own temper, our family's name, our faults and the circle we keep. The one who inspects a friend by these four tests should be willing to be inspected by them.

A story

The Companion for the Palani Pilgrimage

It was an old custom in that town to walk to Palani for Thaipusam. For young Arun it was the first journey: a hundred miles on foot, many days of travel. His mother Meenakshi said, "You should not go alone, you need a companion." Two friends of Arun offered to come: Raghu and Mani.

Meenakshi did not hurry. She invited both home for a meal. While they talked she observed Raghu's nature: he spoke patiently, respected elders, and helped in the kitchen by carrying vessels. Mani was impatient in everything and flared up over small matters.

Next she inquired about their families. Raghu's father was respected in town and had a share in the temple repairs. About Mani's family, some elders said nothing at all, and their silence told a few things.

Meenakshi learnt that Mani had a habit of gambling, and the group he had lately joined was a wrong one. Raghu's friends were youths whom the elders esteemed. Weighing everything, Meenakshi told Arun, "Let Raghu go with you. We shall see Mani another day. One takes a companion after looking at four things: nature, family, faults and company."

On the journey Raghu helped Arun with food, water and night lodging. Once, when Arun's foot was blistered and he could not walk, Raghu walked slowly beside him. Climbing the steps of Palani hill, Arun marvelled at the worth of his mother's careful inquiry.

To reflect on

If a friend's character, family, faults and company were laid out before you, which would you find hardest to look at honestly?
