Explanation

The last verse of the chapter gives a good example. Having described the sorrows of lost judgement, Valluvar now shows how people of lofty mind live. 'Enserntha nenjam' is a mind full of clear thoughts, ideals and reflections. 'Idanudaiyaar' is read as those with room, or those of large mind. They have room in their minds for high thoughts and for other people.

For a person with a high ideal there is no room for petty desires. Just as installing a large statue in a room leaves no place for small toys, when a great aim fills the mind, there is no place for small delusions. That is why Valluvar says the folly that comes of infatuation is not found in such people.

We must remember again that Valluvar does not belittle woman. What is blamed is the delusion that makes one forget oneself. So those who are free of that delusion are those who can treat their wives with respect.

Love and ideals must complete each other. The support of a life partner is a great strength to a high ideal. Those who accept that support with respect and gratitude live with their ideal and their love joined together.

If young people today fix their ideals clearly, delusions shrink on their own. The higher the goal, the fewer the places where one stumbles.

A story

The Anklet that Lakshmana Knew

This episode is told in the Kishkindha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana.

When Ravana carried Sita away, she tied her ornaments in a cloth and dropped them below. The vanaras found them and kept them. When Rama and Lakshmana met Sugriva, he brought the bundle before them.

As Rama took the ornaments in his hand, his eyes filled. "Lakshmana, see whether these are Sita's," he said. Lakshmana looked at them and said, "Brother, I do not know this bracelet or this necklace. But I know this anklet well, for every day I bowed at the feet of my sister-in-law."

That one word reveals Lakshmana's pure mind. For fourteen years in the forest he stood guard over Rama and Sita. His whole mind rested on the service he owed his brother. He never raised his eyes to look at her face.

He had left his wife Urmila in Ayodhya, and he was not without sorrow in his heart. But he left with the firm resolve that duty came first. Tradition says that Urmila accepted this sacrifice and waited in silence. The high mind of both reveals the grace of a household in which each understood the other.

Lakshmana's fourteen years were filled with duty, service and devotion. No other delusion entered his mind.

Lakshmana's life shows that in a mind filled with a lofty purpose, no delusion that robs one of judgement can enter.
