Explanation

Valluvar says courtesy is not some rare, unreachable quality; it begins in an easy way of dealing with everyone. "Enpadham" is an easy state, the quality of being readily seen and spoken to. If one stands apart showing himself high, others hesitate to approach him. In the person who can be approached, courtesy blooms naturally.

The whole couplet is contained in the word "towards everyone". To be sweet to a few and harsh to others is not courtesy. To show the same kindness to the high-placed and the lowly, the known and the unknown, is panbudaimai. One who is sweet only to those useful to him is not courteous but merely a trader.

Hindu tradition honours Rama as a high example. Krishna too, in the Bhagavata, is readily approachable. In the tenth skandha Krishna shares food from one pot with the cowherd boys and plays with them, the image of simplicity that sees no high and low. The people of Vrindavan loved him as God and friend together.

Some commentators take "elidhenpa" as others saying it is easy; some take it as Valluvar himself affirming that courtesy is easy through simplicity. In either, simplicity is the door of courtesy.

In our lives we can do this with a little effort. We can look up and smile at whoever comes to the door; we can answer a child's question patiently. These small acts are easy, but their continuation becomes courtesy.

Keeping oneself unapproachable in a high place is a sign of arrogance. Good relations always grow around those who can be approached. So simplicity is the first step of courtesy.

A story

Krishna Dining with the Cowherd Boys

The early deeds of Krishna are told in the tenth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana. Growing up in Gokula and Vrindavana, Krishna would go daily to the forest with the cowherd boys to graze the cattle. They were children of poor herdsmen's families. With them Krishna played, sang and ran without any distinction.

One noon they all sat on a riverbank. Each took out the food tied up from his home. Krishna sat in the middle; the boys sat around him in a ring. All spread their food on lotus leaves. Each gave his food to the others and enjoyed the others' food. Krishna tucked his flute in his waist-band and ate from each one's food.

Lord Brahma saw this from the sky. "Does the Lord of the worlds eat shared leftover food with cowherd boys?" he wondered. In his doubt he played a trick and hid the cattle and the boys. Krishna himself took the form of each boy and each cow and for a year behaved just as they did. At last Brahma realised his error and bowed.

This tale shows the Lord's simplicity. He was not unreachable on a high seat; among simple boys he was one of them. That is why the boys of Gokula loved him more than life. The truth of "enpadhathaal eydhal elidhu" shows here.

Courtesy shows not on a stage but in daily small sharing. Sharing one's food, gladly accepting others', mixing without regard to high and low are the lessons of this tale. We teach this even today in schools and homes.
