Explanation

Valluvar warns that even a scorn spoken in jest causes pain in the hearer's heart. In "nagaiyullum innadhu igazhchi" he says it is not right to ridicule others thinking it play. The speaker laughs while the hearer is hurt. Words are arrows that cannot be taken back once shot.

The second part is higher: "pagaiyullum panbula". Enmity is a harsh setting. Even there, "paadarivaar", those who know what is proper, do not drop courtesy. Keeping dignity in conflict, not degrading the enemy and not breaking his honour are marks of the courteous.

Rama's courtesy to Ravana in the Yuddha Kanda of the Ramayana is an example. When in battle Ravana's weapons broke, his chariot was destroyed and he stood unarmed, Rama did not kill him but said, "Go today, rest, and come tomorrow." It is courtesy that does not leave propriety even with an enemy.

Some commentators take "nagaiyullum" as even in friendly teasing, others as with the intent to make others laugh. Either way, the conclusion is that ridicule pains.

In daily life it has become common among friends to tease someone's looks, speech or poverty. It looks like laughter but wounds within. Before teasing we can ask a moment, "Will this hurt him?"

The habit of keeping courtesy in enmity is needed in society, in disputes and political debate too. Winning matters, but how we win matters more.

A story

Rama Who Let the Disarmed Ravana Go

In the Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana the war between Rama and Ravana raged for days. Many of Lanka's heroes fell. Kumbhakarna and Indrajit died. At last Ravana himself came to the field. He was of immense strength. But by Rama's arrows his chariot was shattered, his charioteer vanished, his bow broke and his crown fell.

In that state Ravana stood weaponless, without chariot, exhausted. Rama had a bow in hand. Killing him would have been easy. But Rama did not loose his arrow. In a calm voice he said, "Ravana, today you are very weary. Your forces have been destroyed, your weapons are gone. I will not kill you today. Go to Lanka and rest; come tomorrow refreshed."

It was an astonishing courtesy to an enemy. Ravana had not realised the great wrong he had done or bowed to Rama. Still Rama did not leave his path. He held that killing an unarmed man is against the rule of war. He used no scorn or mockery; he spoke with dignity.

Ravana returned to Lanka with bowed head. Valmiki says he felt shame. The next day the war went on and Rama at last defeated him. When Ravana fell, Rama did not mock him; he told Vibhishana to perform his due last rites.

This courtesy, keeping dignity even in a fight, led people to honour Rama as the jewel among men. It is proof that courtesy does not fail even in enmity.
