Explanation

In the last verse of the chapter the heroine openly admits her state. Though she tries to hide her love, her eyes announce it to the village like a beating drum. Araiparai is the drum beaten to announce news in a town. The eyes sound the heroine's secret like that drum.

Notice the double sense of the word marai. Marai means secret; the same word also denotes the Veda. But here only the sense of secret applies. The heroine makes an effort to keep the secret. But the eyes defeat that effort.

"Eyes are the mirror of the face" is a saying. However much we try to hide, our feelings show in our eyes. This is a general truth of human life. The heroine's state here is not merely the secret of one private love; it is the state in which the body betrays the inner truth of all humans.

From this we can learn: if we notice others' eyes we can know their mood. The quality of sensing their sorrow or joy without asking and approaching them with love is the foundation of good relationships. The comparison emppol shows that the heroine includes other women like herself; her experience is not one woman's alone but something many know.

A story

The Language of Eyes in the Malavikagnimitra

Kalidasa's Sanskrit play Malavikagnimitra tells the love of a king. Agnimitra, king of Vidisha, was enchanted on seeing a woman in a painting. She was a princess living in the palace as a maid named Malavika. He grew eager to see her in person.

There is a beautiful scene in the play. As Malavika dances on the stage, Agnimitra watches her. The emotions on her face and the movements of her eyes reveal her heart. Dance is the art of expressing feeling through the body. The play shows that Malavika's eyes spoke her secret love without saying it.

Queen Dharini noticed this too. The same eagerness showed in the king's eyes. The women of the palace and servants had read the language of both pairs of eyes. However much they tried to hide, feeling came out.

This scene recalls the drum-like eyes of the Kural. Though Malavika thought to keep her love hidden, her eyes made it resound in the hall. In a performance, body language announces like a drum.

Bharatanatyam today still gives primacy to the movements of the eyes. Eye expression is taught as a separate art. The tradition of respecting the language of the eyes is deeply rooted in our culture.

At the end of the play the truth that Malavika is of royal blood comes out and the two unite. For us too, understanding the message in eyes in daily life is the first step to relationships.
