Explanation

In this verse the heroine pities her eyes' suffering. The eyes that caused a sickness of love too big for even the sea to bear are now themselves unable to sleep and suffer. There is a tone of "a fair outcome" and also a pity.

Padalaatraa means unable to close the lids. Padal is closing the eyelids, sleeping. The eyes cannot shut their lids, which indicates true sleeplessness. Kadalaatraa is the distinction "that even the sea cannot bear." How vast the sea is! The charm lies in that the eyes, though small, did an act greater than the sea.

This verse makes us feel the relation between eyes and mind. When the mind grieves, the eyes lose rest; body and heart are afflicted by the same sickness. Valluvar showed in his poem long ago what modern medicine says about the link between stress and sleeplessness.

Sleeplessness is not a small trouble; it is a sign of the burden the mind is bearing. A family member or friend who notices it can lovingly help. Valluvar's message on sleeplessness is fresh even today; rather than telling the sleepless "sleep," asking the cause that weighs on the mind is more helpful. The word kadalaatraa in the Kural recalls the sea simile of the previous chapter. In this way chapters subtly interweave.

A story

The Eyes of Sundarar

The Periya Puranam tells the life of Sundaramurti Nayanar. Sundarar was one claimed by Lord Shiva at Thiruvennainallur. When in his youth he married Sangiliyar, tradition says he swore in the temple at Thiruvottriyur to the bride that he would not part from the town.

Later when he had to go to Thiruvarur he broke his oath and left the town. Because he broke it, the Periya Puranam says, both his eyes lost sight. It seemed to him as though the Lord himself had taken away his eyes.

The blind Sundarar went from town to town singing and appealing to the Lord. The hymns he sang at places like Thiruvenpakkam and Kanchipuram are touching. When he begged Ekambaranatha at Kanchipuram, the Purana says, sight returned to his left eye, and later at Thiruvarur his right eye also regained sight.

In that time Sundarar's eyes bore the penance for his fault. It is easy to imagine them sleepless and suffering in darkness without seeing the Lord. As the heroine of the Kural pities her eyes, Sundarar's eyes became the form of his prayer.

Sundarar's story reaches us even today through the Tevaram Tirumurais. The songs he sang are the musical form of his tears; when sorrow becomes song, it lives across centuries.

Though he lost his eyes, love for the Lord guided him. This history is a testimony that love breaks barriers and gives light.
