Explanation

In the first verse of the chapter the heroine admits a bitter truth: she herself agreed to the hero's going away. Thinking of his duty, thinking of his welfare, she gave leave, "Go and come." Now as a result of that consent her body has bloomed with pasalai and turned pale. Because it was a parting she herself agreed to, she is in a state in which she can complain to no one.

The question "to whom shall I tell" shows the depth of this loneliness. If she tells her friend, the friend may say, "You yourself sent him." To tell the hero, he is far away. If she tells the villagers, blame will fall on him. So there is no place to tell. It is the pain of bearing alone the consequence of her own choice.

Commentators take nayandhavarkku as "to the beloved" and explain that I agreed to his going. Some interpret nalkaamai naernthen as accepting his not showing grace. In both readings the key is that the heroine admits her share.

In our lives too, when we suffer the consequence of a decision we made ourselves, we hesitate to tell others. Even then, opening the heart to someone trustworthy lightens the burden. In "pasandha en panbu", panbu may denote both condition and character: my pale state, my pale nature. The heroine sees her bodily state as a mark of her very nature.

A story

Sumitra's Consent

In the Ayodhya Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, the character of Sumitra is very noble. Hearing that Rama was leaving for exile, Lakshmana resolved to go with him. He went to take leave of his mother Sumitra. Sumitra heard that her son would part from her and live fourteen years in the forest.

She did not stop him. Valmiki records the words she spoke. "Regard Rama as your father; regard Sita as your mother; regard the forest as Ayodhya; go happily," she blessed him. Her view was that her son serving his elder brother was her joy. There was greatness in that consent.

But the days after that consent were not easy for her. After her son parted she languished alone in the palace. After Dasharatha died she shared the grief with Kausalya. We may imagine that the thought "It was I who sent him" weighed on her. Unable to blame others for the result of her consent, she bore it in silence.

The heroine of the Kural says, "I consented to his not granting; to whom shall I tell?" Sumitra's state was the same. She paid the price for the leave she herself gave. History records that as a result of that sacrifice Lakshmana became a great support to Rama.

Valmiki shows Sumitra as one who does not boast of her sacrifice. Her silence is her greatness. Sorrows not openly spoken lie hidden in history; remembering them is the respect we pay them.

This tale shows the silent side of sacrifice. Everyone who takes great decisions comes upon moments of bearing their emotional weight alone.

Is there a decision you made for good reasons whose emotional cost you have never told anyone?
