Explanation

In this verse Valluvar presents pallor as a living character. That pallor has a pride: the pride "the hero gave me." In that pride it creeps over the heroine's body. The word oorum recalls a slowly moving insect or creeper; pallor spreads slowly but surely.

The heroine's state of mind here is subtle. Pallor causes her pain; but since it was given by the hero she cannot wholly hate it. Anything given by the hero is in a way precious to her. Even if painful, that it came from him is its value. This strange nature of love is beautifully recorded in the verse.

In Sangam literature the idea "pasalai is the hero's gift" occurs in many places. Valluvar accepts it, makes pallor itself a speaking character and shows its pride gracefully. So sorrow sounds mixed with a little humour.

In our lives too, even the pain given by a loved one is sometimes held on to like a memento. It is good to examine whether that is healthy, and to tie love to our growth rather than to memories. The word thagai in the Kural carries the senses of pride and worthiness. Valluvar smilingly shows that even pallor has its own dignity.

A story

The Voice of Pallor in the Akam Tradition

The simile of this Kural is a direct continuation of the Sangam akam poems. In Sangam texts the heroine lamenting to her friend that "this pallor is his gift" occurs in many poems. The Tamil akam tradition sang the feelings of lovers by joining them with nature and daily life. Those voices are what we take here as "akam voices."

We can imagine such a scene. In a village of the Mullai land lives a heroine. Her hero has gone to the king's army. He said he would return with the rainy season. The rains came; he did not. The friend looks at her body and asks, "Why have you turned so pale?" It is a common akam scene; it shows the nature of the tradition without referring to any particular poem directly.

The heroine smiles softly. "This is the ornament he gave," she says. The friend is amazed. The heroine explains: "Did he go leaving me nothing? He at least left this pallor; it reminds me of him." In this reply sorrow, love and jest are mixed.

This tradition is a most distinctive feature of Tamil akam poems: the power to make even sorrow beautiful. Valluvar accepted the tradition and refined it in his Kurals.

In Tamil akam poems love is never mere lament; wit, jest, nature and the divine are all mixed in. That mixture keeps akam poems fresh even today.

Even today many in separation see their sorrow as a memento. It sustains them. But the final aim of love is that the gift should also turn to joy.

Is there a sorrow you are holding on to because it keeps you connected to someone? What would let you hold the connection without the pain?
