Explanation

In this verse the heroine shows two scenes happening in a single moment. Uvakkaan means "look there," pointing to what is at a distance. Ivakkaan means "look here," pointing to what is near. The hero is going away yonder; already here the pallor spreads. Both happen at the same time.

Here the swiftness of pallor is indicated. The hero takes time to go far; but pallor comes at once. Before he vanishes from sight, her colour has changed. Sorrow does not come after the event; it comes with it. The verse is formed like a small dramatic scene, making us imagine gestures like pointing a hand.

We realise here that the mind is faster than the body. The hero walks slowly away; the heroine's mind has already experienced the full sorrow of parting. Anticipation works faster than the event.

In our lives too we experience the sorrow of a parting before the time of parting comes. The lesson is to realise this and live fully the time that remains. Commentators take it as the immediate speech of the scene of the hero's departure; before he crosses the threshold, pallor has come. The demonstrative words uva and iva give this verse the natural flavour of spoken Tamil. It sounds with the closeness of speech more than of poetry.

A story

The Day Rama's Chariot Left

In the Ayodhya Kanda, the scene of Rama's departure for exile is very moving. Rama, Sita and Lakshmana, wearing bark garments, climbed into the chariot. Sumantra drove it. The people of Ayodhya gathered in the streets. When the chariot set out, the people ran after it.

Dasharatha stood on a palace balcony and watched. "Stop! Stop the chariot!" he cried. Rama told Sumantra, "Drive quickly." He knew that if he heard his father's voice his resolve would weaken. The chariot sped. Dasharatha collapsed, Valmiki says.

At that moment Dasharatha's face paled. Before Rama had vanished from sight his body gave way. Supported in Kausalya's arms he was taken inside the palace. Before the dust of the chariot carrying his son had settled, the father's life was stricken.

The Kural line "look there, he goes; look here, pallor spreads" comes alive here. There goes the son; here pales the father's face. The Ramayana also shows that in a few days Dasharatha gave up his life in grief for his son.

Valmiki describes Dasharatha's grief very finely. He was bound by his promise; he himself knew fully the consequence of his act. A state in which responsibility and sorrow were joined made his last days heavy.

This scene shows that the sorrow of parting begins at the very moment of parting, and that it afflicts men and women alike.
