Explanation

In this verse two days are set against each other: the day of union and today. On the wedding day the heroine's shoulders stood swollen with joy. The word 'veengiya' shows the fullness of that happiness, a joy that appears in the body. The same shoulders are thin and drooping today. So they seem to announce of themselves the beloved's departure. In this comparison the extent of separation becomes clear; the peak of happiness and the depth of sorrow look at one another in the same limb.

'Thanandhamai' means the fact of being parted. In 'saala arivippa', 'saala' means very much; the shoulders announce the parting very well, that is, plainly. The heroine may have wished to hide the separation, but her body does not give room for hiding. Usually memories of the wedding day bring sweetness; here the same memory becomes proof of grief. The commentators point out that the memory of that sweet day makes the separation sharper still.

In present life we have noticed how the body's light is different in joyful days and in sad ones. The glowing face in a wedding photograph and the wasted face in separation are the same person at two different times. The verse reminds us that the change in a loved one's face is a mirror telling the state of that life.

A story

Andal's Dream of the Wedding

We may recall the famous decad 'Varanam Ayiram' sung by Andal in the Nachiyar Tirumozhi.

Andal, who grew up in Srivilliputhur, was firm that she would have Lord Ranganatha alone as her husband. Every day she wove garlands of flowers, and tradition says she first wore each one herself before offering it to the Lord. One wish always lived in her heart: to sit with the Lord's hand in hers on the wedding dais.

One day she had a dream. In it the bridegroom Narayana comes in procession surrounded by a thousand elephants. Golden pots and festoons are set up through the town. The sound of the Vedas and conches rises. Narayana takes her hand and walks round the sacred fire. Her heart fills with joy and her shoulders swell with delight. In the memory of that joy she sings happily.

But when the dream broke and she awoke, she was alone. There was no wedding dais, no bridegroom; only the sweetness of the dream remained in her heart. When that sweetness glows in the memory, the emptiness of waking seems sharper. The shoulders that swelled in the dream were thin in waking life.

The tradition holds that the longing of this separation is what lies behind her other songs, and that in the end she merged with the Lord. The loneliness that the joy of the dream-wedding brings in waking life shows the keenness of separation.

As Valluvar's heroine recalls the swelling joy of the wedding day and announces today's thinness, so the sweetness of Andal's dream announces the emptiness of waking.
