Explanation

In this verse the heroine speaks to her heart with a touch of humour. She knows that her heart has gone to him, or will go. So she says, 'When you go, take my eyes with you too.' It is a speech of scolding, humour and pain mixed. The eyes are throbbing to see him, and that throbbing eats up the heroine's very body. The phrase 'ennaith thinnum', 'will eat me', is very strong. Valluvar shows desire as a fire or a hunger that consumes the body.

Heart and eyes are both important organs of love. In the akam tradition love begins first through the eye and then descends into the heart. Here the heroine separates the two. The heart thinks; the eye wishes to see. The heart can travel easily anywhere, but the eye cannot cross that same distance. So she says, 'Heart, take the eyes along when you go.' The commentators praise this verse as one that wonderfully sees the desire of each of the two organs separately.

Today too, when we think of someone far away, we long, 'If only I could see them once in person.' Video calls have come, but the wish to see in person has not decreased. The verse tells us that this longing is natural to human beings. The heart can give memory, but nothing can make up for the sight that the eye gives. Realising the worth of that direct sight, we should not miss chances to meet those we love.

A story

The Gopis' Song of Longing

The Gopi Gita in the Rasa Lila section of the tenth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana may be recalled here.

On an autumn night in Vrindavan, Krishna played his flute. Hearing it, the gopis forgot their homes and tasks and ran to him. He danced and sported with them. But after a little while, Krishna sensed that the gopis had begun to think too highly of themselves, and suddenly vanished from them.

The gopis were bewildered. They wandered through the whole forest searching for him. They asked the trees and creepers where he had gone. Their eyes looked for him in every direction. In the darkness and moonlight they found his footprints and followed them. In their longing to see him, their eyes seemed to eat them away.

At last they sat on the bank of the Yamuna and began to sing his praise. That is called the Gopi Gita. In it they said: 'When you go to the forest by day, a moment becomes an age for us who do not see you. For eyes that gaze at your face, even the blink of an eyelid seems an obstruction.' In these moving lines the longing of eyes is heard clearly.

Hearing their song, Krishna appeared before them again. The eyes of the gopis were fulfilled, and they were immersed in joy.

The heart may go anywhere, but the eye longs for the sight. The gopis' eyes showed such longing. When Valluvar's heroine says 'take my eyes too', it is the same longing.
