Explanation

In this verse the heroine places a hard choice before her heart: either give up love, or give up modesty. She says she cannot keep both together. In this plea the peak of her inner struggle can be seen. In the Tamil akam tradition a woman's modesty is regarded as a rare ornament. She is ashamed to tell her love openly. But love urges her to go and seek him. Modesty holds her back; love pulls her on. She suffers because two forces in opposite directions collide in her.

The address 'nannenje', 'good heart', is worth noticing. In some places the heroine has scolded her heart as foolish; here she calls it lovingly 'good heart'. She needs that tenderness to make it accept her request. The commentators take 'vidu' in two ways: you give up one of them, or you leave me. Either way the idea is that she cannot carry both. There is an irony too: whichever the heart chooses, she suffers. To give up love is impossible; to give up modesty is against her nature.

In present-day life as well we get caught between two such feelings. The mind wants one thing, but society, tradition and hesitation hold us back. The first step in that struggle is to feel honestly what truly matters to us. Rather than suppressing both and going on grieving, to choose one and walk on with courage brings peace. The verse points beautifully to the burden of that choice.

A story

Usha's Dream

This is the story of Usha and Aniruddha told in the tenth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana and in the Harivamsa.

Usha was the daughter of the asura Banasura. One night she had a dream. In the dream she saw a handsome young man, and felt that she was happy with him. When she woke in the morning he was not there. She did not know who he was or where he lived. Her heart sank in longing.

She struggled within her heart. 'Is it fitting to seek one who came in a dream? Will it not be a great shame to my father and my family? But can I live forgetting him?' Modesty made her tongue-tied; love made her tremble. Her food lessened and her body thinned. Without telling anyone she faded alone.

Usha's friend Chitralekha was a skilled painter. Seeing Usha's state, she asked lovingly what was the matter. Usha hesitated at first, then with shyness told her dream. Chitralekha drew pictures of many: gods, gandharvas, kings. When she came to one picture, Usha bowed her head in shyness. He was the one who had come in her dream: Aniruddha, grandson of Krishna.

By her yogic power Chitralekha went to Dwaraka and brought Aniruddha to Usha's palace. The two met. Later Banasura's anger led to a war; in the end Krishna intervened, all was settled, and the two were married, the Purana says.

When modesty and love collided, Usha opened the truth with the help of her friend. This story shows that the courage to tell one's feeling to even one person opens the way.

To reflect on

Where are modesty and a deep wish pulling you in two directions, and whom could you trust to talk it through?
